第三部分 阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A B C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。 A Elvis lives. At least he does today, in the hearts of tens of thousands showing their faithful love for the King on the 34th anniversary of his death. Refusing to let go of fond memories, fans are once again flooding to Graceland, Elvis‘ house. This annual event is informally known as ―Dead Elvis Week‖, an almost religious journey in memory of Elvis‘ death on August 16, 1977. Feeling like a cross between an Easter night and Mardi Gras, the week of sadness is hardly a sad affair. In fact, it includes all kinds of parties, concerts, and memorials. The highlight, however, is a candlelight night that more than 10, 000 fans from all over the world took part in. In twos and threes, they walk up to the small poolside garden where Elvis is buried. ―The King of Rock‘n‘ Roll‖ may be dead, but for these devotees, he is never truly gone. Elvis Aaron Presley wasn‘t born a king. As a matter of fact, he grew up dirt-poor in rural Tennessee. Legend(传奇) has it that Elvis was working as a truck driver in Memphis when he made his first recording: a late birthday gift for his mother. Later, when the owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips, heard Elvis‘ stirring voice, he thought he had finally found what he had been looking for — a white man who sounded black. Phillips boasted(夸口) that with Elvis on his label, he would make a million dollars. Early Sun recordings had Elvis on songs and guitar, supported by another guitar and a stand-up bass. He was playing the kind of material he would one day become famous for: blues and country songs. It was a long way from the white jumpsuits and Las Vegas-style concerts everyone now connects with Elvis. But those early recordings helped what the world now knows as rock‘n‘roll come into being. 51. When did the author write the passage above according to the passage? A. In 1977. B. In 2011. C. Between an Easter night and Mardi Gras. D. Not mentioned. 52. What can be inferred from the underlined part in Paragraph 3? A. Elvis was a white man who looked like a black one. B. Sam Phillips didn‘t manage to find what he had been looking for. C. In some way, the black then had a greater gift for singing than the white. D. Sam Phillips had been seeking a white man who acted like a black. 53. What is the BEST title of the passage? A. Elvis Aaron Presley. B. Dead Elvis Week. C. Legend of the King. D. The Origin of Rock‘n‘Roll. B If you've ever seen a James Bond movie, you'll know that the hero gets around in a smart Aston Martin car. Even if you know fully well that you could never afford such an expensive vehicle, you don't forget the name, or the car. Why? You have been affected by product placement.

Companies pay a film to place their products in the movie. Product placement took off in the West in the 1980s and is now catching on in China. Two Hunan Satellite TV dramas are recent examples:Ugly Wudi and Let's Go Watch the Meteor Shower (《一起去看流星雨》). Shampoo, mobile phones, cars and fitness centers – anything can be product-placed. Advertisers value the mass appeal of the movies, knowing that a successful film can showcase their goods to hundreds of thousands of viewers. But when product placement takes over, artistic considerations can take a back seat. Cai Zhiyong has been product-placing for years. The Beijing-based advertiser admits there is a conflict between art and business. He explains the way one ad works. In If You are the One (《非 诚勿扰》), the actress Shu Qi plays a flight attendant. The movie contains product placement for airline companies. Cash-strapped filmmakers often have to give less consideration to the quality of their work because they need money from advertisers. In the original story for Meteor Shower, the heroine's mother owned an ice cream shop. But no ice cream company wanted to sponsor (赞助) the film. For this reason, the story was changed. In the film the man drinks 20 cups of milk tea instead of eating ice cream. So you may see the power of business over the movies, since the script (剧本) was perhaps written so that a product could be placed-whether it was ice cream or milk tea. 54. James Bond movies are mentioned in the first paragraph to show_________. A. how popular James Bond is B. how great the Aston Martin car is C. how to make a movie more artistic D. how effectively product placement works 55. Product placement can have a bad effect on the_________ of a movie. A. atmosphere B. mass appeal C. box-office success D. artistic value 56.What does the underlined word "cash-strapped" in Paragraph 6 probably mean? A. Short of money. B. Wasting a lot of money. C. having enough money. D. Trying to save money. 57.We can learn from the example of Meteor Shower that__________. A. business has a big say in the movie B. the original story was not suitable for a movie C. filmmakers are only concerned about making money D. milk tea is more popular than ice cream C It was Saturday night in London. I was waiting to catch the bus home with my friend Laura. I was dressed as the cartoon character the Pink Panther, complete with pink cat ears attached to a hairband, a pink tail made of a long piece of pink cloth, and whiskers drawn on my face. Laura was dressed as a cat. It was, of course , Halloween, and we had been at a Halloween party. The night of October 31 is a perfect excuse to dress up in silly costumes and have a scary party. Traditionally it was ―All Souls‘ Day‖, when the ghosts of the dead rose from their graves. In the UK, however, it also means the end of British Summer Time. All the clocks are put back one hour on the last Saturday of October. You wake up on Sunday morning thinking that it is 8 am, and then remember with relief that you actually have another hour in bed. The trouble is, the buses had not changed their timetables. The night bus drivers were still

operating according to their original hours. However, the day bus drivers had already put their watches back, and were looking forward to that extra hour in bed. So Laura and I waited and waited and waited. People who went past stared, laughed, or made funny comments – ―Someone locks the cat out of the house tonight?‖ or ―Who lets the cat out of the bag?‖ Finally the bus came – three hours later. By that time we had made friends with local shop owners as they opened for morning business, as well as with a friendly tramp (流浪汉) sitting in the street with his dog. Halloween may be a party night – just don‘t forget the practicalities (实际情况) when you‘re in the UK. It could get really scary. 58. What can we learn from the passage? A. People usually dress themselves up on Halloween. B. Halloween is on the night of Oct. 30. C. In the UK, Halloween is celebrated in exactly the same way as other countries. D. On Halloween, the night bus and the day bus both operated according to the original timetable. 59. Why did the author and her friend have to wait for three hours for the bus that night? A. Because the bus was delayed. B. Because it was Halloween that night. C. Because the clocks were put back. D. Because they were late for the night bus. 60. How did the passers-by react to the author and Laura‘s costumes? A. They were scared. B. They smiled at them. C. They were surprised. D. They thought they were funny. 61. What did the author and Laura do while waiting for the bus? A. They helped the local people. B. They made friends with local shop owners and a tramp. C. They helped a tramp. D. They took care of a homeless dog. D Chocolate is good for your heart, skin and brain. Usually, people think that chocolate is bad for their health. They describe chocolate as ―something to die for‖ or say ―death by chocolate‖. Now they should bite their tongues! Evidence is showing that some kinds of chocolate are actually good for you in the following ways: A happier heart Scientists at Harvard University recently examined 136 studies on cocoa—the main ingredient in chocolate and found that it does seem to strengthen the heart.Studies have shown heart benefits from increased blood flow. These benefits are the result of cocoa‘s chemicals, which seem to prevent both cell damage and inflammation(炎症). Better blood pressure If yours is high, chocolate may help.Jeffrey Blumberg from Tufts University recently found that people with high blood pressure who ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate per day for two weeks saw their blood pressure drop quickly. There are also thousands of pieces of metal and plastic. Some of them are only about the size of a fingernail. Many are much larger. Scientists consider all these objects to be space junk, and they are a problem. Since people first launched rockets into space in the 1950s, we have been leaving behind all sorts of things. Much of the space junk is made up of little pieces of things that were once bigger objects, until they struck each other and broke apart. Sometimes larger pieces survive the extreme heat through the atmosphere and hit the ground or the ocean at great speeds. But space junk falling on housetops is not the biggest worry. Scientists are concerned about the Kessler syndrome. It is named after the American scientist who first thought of the idea in 1978. Imagine what happens when an empty rocket strikes another while orbiting the Earth. Two big things become many smaller things. They then hit other things. The pieces get smaller and smaller until they form a cloud of junk that blocks the path of future space vehicles.

Marco Castronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher, suggested launching a satellite into space that would get very close to some of the larger pieces of space junk. The satellite would connect a small rocket to the useless object. When the rocket explodes, it pushes the junk into a lower and slower orbit, nearer the Earth. After a time, the junk burns up in the atmosphere. Scientists have been concerned about space junk for many years. Right now, the costs of the clean- up have been too great. Mr. Castronuovo says his system could be put in place for a much more reasonable amount of money. 67. What does the underlined part ―space junk‖ in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. It refers to small pieces of things that were once bigger objects. B. It refers to objects that survived the extreme heat through the atmosphere. C. It refers to clouds that are made up of small objects in space. D. It refers to all kinds of objects that have been left behind in space. 68. Why do scientists consider the Kessler syndrome a big problem? A. Space junk clouds are likely to block the path of spacecraft. B. An empty rocket might strike a spacecraft orbiting the Earth. C. Space junk might fall onto the Earth, causing damage. D. Space junk becomes bigger and bigger until hard to get rid of. 69. What is mainly talked about in the passage? A. Smaller objects come together to form clouds of space junk. B. Human beings are responsible for space junk. C. Space junk is a big problem human beings have to find ways to solve. D. An Italian researcher has found a good way to remove space junk. 70. What is the author‘s attitude towards Marco Castronuovo‘s method of cleaning up space junk? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. A year ago when I was in junior 3, I got into the habit of surfing the Internet with my cellphone even in class. When my class teacher told my parents what had happened, my father turned red with anger and blamed me in the presence of the teacher. I couldn‘t bear it , shouting“I hate you!‖ and ran away. Only when my parents finally got me back at midnight did I realize that I was wrong and that they did care, which could be seen from their eyes. We had a heart-to-heart talk that night. It was then that I began to understand that parents are the people who love us most, so it‘s necessary to keep a good relationship with them. Besides, they have experienced more and always try their best to protect us from any danger. If we often talk with them about our life and experience, we will know each other better. In addition, if sometimes we don‘t come to an agreement , it‘s vital for us to learn to put ourselves into their shoes and soon we‘ll have a better understanding of them.
