As a photographer, my life is measured from one story to the next. My oldest son was born in the middle of a long story about the Endangered Species Act. My daughter came along with a pack of gray wolves. Twenty stories later, though, it’s the story in Alaska that I’ll remember best. It was the story about the loss of wilderness — and the story during which my wife Kathy got cancer. That’s the one that made time stand still. I stopped taking pictures on the day when she found that tumor (肿瘤). Cruelly, it was Thanksgiving. By Christmas, she had become very weak. Some days she was so sick that she couldn’t watch TV. Early examination saves time. But ours was not early. By the time you can feel it yourself, it’s often bigger than the doctor wants it to be. Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this terrible disease, unfair as storm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to change us, for

good. We learn to simplify, enjoying what we have instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t. Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is a new way of life and new way of seeing, all from the cancer. In the end each of us has so little time. We have less of it than we can possibly imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy’s cancer has not spread, and her prognosis (诊断) is good, we try to make it all count now, enjoying every part of every day. I’ve picked up my camera again. I watch the sky, searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come, Kathy and I gather our children and take the time to catch snowflakes (雪花) on our tongues. After all, this is good. This is what we’re living for. 21.As a photographer, the author used to ________. A. leave his daughter with a pack of gray wolves B. express his love for his family in a special way C. devote much more to his career than his family D. miss a great many important historical moments 22.Why did the author decide to stop taking pictures? ________ A. To cure his own disease. C. To seek a better position. B. To leave the wildness alone. D. To spend more time with his wife ________

23.What is the biggest change the cancer has brought to the author? A. He treasured every bit of time with his family. B. He has become a stranger to his children. C. He takes his work more seriously. D. He focuses more on medical care.

24.The author and his family catch snowflakes on their tongues probably because ________. A. the snowflakes taste very good C. they regard that as a way to enjoy life B It’s going to be a chaotic (混乱的) day. How do I know? It’s Monday. OK, joking. But, I do predict that today will be filled with the normal last-minute tasks, fire drills, and unforeseen events. So, how do you keep yourself from being swept away in the stream of chaos? How do you remain B. snowflakes are what they feed on D. there is beautiful light in the snowflakes

calm while others are rushing and panicking? There’s a problem … Panic! When things don’t go as planned, how do you react? Are you the calm one who works to fix things? Or the one running around like Chicken Little screaming that the sky is falling? Getting upset or alarmed can seem like natural reactions to a problem. Here are a few tips to help you remain calm in the face of the storm: ? Don’t Panic You are better able to find a solution if you aren’t panicking. If you can keep

your head when others are losing theirs, you will be able to make a clear decision in the chaos. ? There Aren’t Many True Emergencies My time as a Naval Officer taught me about true

emergencies. In the military, when there is a problem, people can get hurt or die. This is not usually the case when the office copier or email server goes down. Keep things in perspective. There are very few true emergencies in life. ? Avoid the “Fight or Flight” When you are stressed, your body will want to go into “fight

or flight.” Your body was designed to keep you safe from danger, but its natural reflexes (反射) aren’t always the best solution against a project gone away. Keep your emotions in check and ensure that your physical reflexes don’t make bad decisions for you. ? Head Into The Problem While everyone else is running away, true leaders walk into a

problem. Sticking your head in the sand only makes things worse. Instead of trying to ignore the situation, get to the heart of the issue as soon as possible. Only then can you address it. How Will You React? When you find yourself ready to lose it, take a step back. Ask, “Is this truly an emergency?” Keep your head when others are losing theirs. And you’ll find that you are that much closer to a solution. 25.The author writes the first paragraph in order to ________. A. describe a chaotic day C. make a joke B. advocate a way of life D. introduce a topic

26.In order to make a wiser decision in the chaos, you should ________. A. low your head B. shake your head C. keep your head D. stick your head

27.The example of the author’s time as a Naval Officer is used to illustrate ________. A. there are many true emergencies in life C. some emergencies are really urgent B. there are seldom true emergencies in life D. some emergencies can’t be predicted

28.What would the best title for the passage? ________.

A. Fight or Flight C. Less Talking, More Doing C

B. True emergencies D. Keep calm in the face of the storm

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we’re while we’re eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work. New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere. However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often, “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.” Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There’s only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to life. Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now. Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives. 29.The underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________. A. dangerous B. common C. comfortable ________ D. awkward

30.Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katzmarzyk? A. Sitting too long may help increase one’s life. B. Exercise is important and don’t sit too long. C. Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.

D. Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task. 31.What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4? A. It’s a study that begins too late. C. It’s a relatively new area of study. ________

B. It’s a hot subject studied by experts. D. It’s not ignored by many experts. ________

32.Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more? A. To offer them the chance to exercise. C. To give them more comfort. D

B. To improve their work efficiency. D. To seek pleasure while working.

The United States Capitol Dome (美国国会大厦) in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles, or scaffolding (脚手架), and heavy cloth as part of a repair project. The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage. The dome was completed around 1863. U.S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off excess (多余的) layers of paint.” Workers are removing old paint. They covered a large part of the building in plastic and a special cloth to protect workers from the wind and other elements. Much of the work is done at night, when lawmakers are not in the building. Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was dramatic, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly; it is kind of a disappointment.” Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries ... and you know, there just needs to be preventive maintenance (保养). I am not upset with that at all.” The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready

for the inauguration (就职典礼) of a new president in January 2017. 33.We can learn from the passage that the United States Capitol Dome is ________. A. surrounded by many repair projects B. worn by exposure to the weather C. well maintained and in excellent condition D. acknowledged as a symbol of the U.K. government 34.According to Don Ritchie, the present repair work involves ________. a. stopping the leaks b. changing the frame c. removing the old paint d. replacing the lights e. filling the narrow breaks A. abc B. bcd C. bde D. ace

35.Which of the following can describe the recent visitors to the Capitol? ________ A. They held different views on the Capitol’s current appearance. B. They were impressed by the white dome’s fantastic beauty. C. They could get a clear look at the dome. D. They were all disappointed at the sight of the Capitol building. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude (感激) every day. The following three steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life: Notice the Good Things in Your Life 36 .Pay attention to the small everyday details of your life - nature, people,

community, shelter, creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. And then start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more likely that we will notice good things as they happen. 37

There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude. These are moments when you say to yourself, “Oh, wow, this is amazing!” or “How great this is!” Pause. Notice and absorb that feeling of true gratitude. Let it sink in. Enjoy your blessings in the moment they happen. Express Gratitude Expressing gratitude is more than being polite. 38 .Show your appreciation to

someone who really did something nice. Say: “It was really kind of you to …,” “You did me a big favor when ...,” or “Thank you for being there when ...”. 39 .Hold the door open for

the person behind you, even if it means waiting a little longer than you normally would. True gratitude doesn’t leave you feeling like you owe other people something - after all, if you’ve done someone a favor, you probably don’t want the person to feel like you expect something back in return. 40 .

A. You can also express gratitude by doing a kindness. B. It’s all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good. C. It’s about showing your heartfelt appreciation. D. Enjoy the Feeling of Gratitude. E. Help someone without letting the person find out it was you. F. Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for. G. It’s amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful. 第三节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可填入空白处的 最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。 My class and I visited Chris Care Center in Phoenix, Arizona to comfort the old people who needed a little cheering up during the holiday season.
