Dear Daisy, Phew! I?m so glad that day is over. I was so worried all summer that my first day at my new
4

school would be terrible. I?m really tired, but my first day at school went well and I feel much better now. First of all, we had to meet outside the school building. I was very nervous because my primary school only had 300 pupils but in the secondary school there are about 1,300. What a difference! The older pupils are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school. The other problem was that I didn?t know anyone. My family moved over the summer holidays, because of Dad?s new job. So now I have to try to make some new friends. Standing in front of the school this morning, I wanted to be back at my old school with my old friends. The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It?s on the 5th floor and … guess what? ... We aren?t allowed to use the lift. I couldn?t believe it. When we were walking up all the stairs I started talking to another boy who didn?t know anyone. He said his family had moved from Hong Kong over the summer. He seemed really nice so we sat together when we got to our classroom, out of breath! He said his English was very poor but I thought it was really good. We spent all morning with Mrs. Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school has a different timetable—can you believe it? Half of the school is learning Spanish as a second language and the other half learns French. I?m in the Spanish group, which sounds like fun. I?m worried that I?ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room! How will anyone help me if nobody else has the same timetable as me? Lunchtime was OK. After lunch we started lessons. I had maths, which was complicated and difficult and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looks interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived. So far so good. I?m quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I?ve got science. I hate science! Jason 56. How did the author feel on the first day at his new school? A. Terrible. B. Good. C. Worried. D. Funny. 57. The head teacher came to ______. A. tell the students which class they were in B. give the students a timetable C. show the students how to use the lift D. tell the students what language they would learn 58. What does the author think of ?Everyone in the school has a different timetable.?? A. He liked this very much. B. He was worried about this. C. He liked this a bit. D. He couldn?t understand the timetable.

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The announcement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theater box office in Richland Hills any day
5

between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9 o'clock to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theater was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unfortunately, the theater is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip-so I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth hearing the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets. 59. He learned ______ that there would be a concert last Friday. A. from his friends B. from one of his colleagues C. over the radio D. from the newspaper 60. He could go and buy the ticket ______. A. any day before work hours B. both before and after work hours C. only during lunch time D. on Saturday and Sunday 61. The word "relieved" in the last two sentences may best be replaced by "______". A. surprised B. pleased C. puzzled D. sorry 62. The story is about ______. A. a good concert B. someone enjoying a good concert C. someone trying to buy concert tickets for his friends D. someone's disappointment at not being able to go to the concert

In the age of reality television, success isn't the only way to the public eye. Being unsuccessful can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong. Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled "The True Idol" on April 6. The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version(改写本)of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" on the television show "American Idol 3", on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act. Hung's response? "I already gave my best, so I have no regrets at all." That's good, because any common person would have found plenty to regret: the off-key singing; the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high; the terrible dancing; the hips jerking(摇摆)to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad. But, it was this very bad act that sold well. Marc Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: "Every one of us is happily guilty of
6

singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That's what William did and immediately won the hearts of America. " Whatever it is, for the moment it's big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station. So, what does Hung think of this? "There were all these people saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn't have much respect for me and some were kind of hard. " Now, he says he's not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour(魅力)or to accept it. Returning to normal hasn't been easy. 63. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Sometimes an idol behaves quite foolishly. B. Hung's performance attracted the public eye. C. How an unsuccessful person became famous. D. Success sometimes does not require hard work. 64. Hung was popular in America for all the following reasons EXCEPT ______. A. his shirt and pants B. his off-key singing C. his hips jerking D. his excellent version 65. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 6 refer to? A. William Hung. B. Hung's bad act. C. Hung's website. D. The public's opinion. 66. Which of the following shows the correct order of what happened to Hung? a. The entertainment firms made an agreement with Hung. b. The judges cut Hung off in mid-act in the singing contest. c. Hung became popular among Americans. d. Hung gave a terrible performance though he tried his best. e. Three websites put Hung's funny performance on the Internet. A. d, b, e, c, a B. a, c, d, b, e C. a, d, b, c, e D. d, b, a, e, c

Can you remember the first time you learned to ride a bike or drive a car? Learning these skills changed your life forever and opened up new horizons(视野). Learning about computers can be like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you will never go back to the old days. The new technology is simply too convenient and too powerful. Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has allowed us to extend our capabilities. Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed--- the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds. Computers have saved organizations millions of dollars. Furthermore, these same computer systems have opened up opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected. The computer may multiply what we do, and the return on investment is high. The growth of computer
7

usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. Invasion of privacy(侵犯隐私), fraud(欺诈), and computer-related mistakes are just a few shocking examples. The computer is like a double-edged sword. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can cut deep into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through a good knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the dangers while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age. 67. The writer thinks learning about computers is like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car because _____ . A. it is simple and practical B. it needs a lot of practice C. it leads people to new life experiences D. it takes much time to master the skills 68. According to the passage, computers are good for people in the following ways EXCEPT_____. A. avoiding mistakes B. saving money C. making money D. opening up opportunities 69. According to the writer, the bad effects of computers can be avoided if we _____. A. have sound knowledge of computer systems B. tell people not to misuse computers C. have strict rules over the use of computers D. make more investments in the technology 70. This passage is probably written for ______. A. computers B. computer products C. computer learners D. computer programmers

Should students wear school uniforms or not? People might think that I am behind the times, but I believe wearing uniforms at school is a good idea. A school uniform helps us feel like part of a group. For example, when our school team plays with another school team, the players will feel encouraged to see all their school friends wearing the school colors. These days, when a school does not have its own uniform, many students wear very fashionable clothes to school. Some are even trying to show others that they have the coolest clothes. I think this is wrong. How we look is not as important as what we learn at school. Why would we need to wear these kinds of clothes to school when the purpose of going to school is learning? If we want to look smart all the time, we will have to wear different clothes every day. We come to school five days a week. This means we have to buy new clothes all the time. Won?t it become too expensive to look smart? As students, we exercise and do sport all the time. We need clothes that are comfortable and do not need special care, but fashionable clothes are usually difficult to take care of. I always play
8

football with my friends after school. I like to wear a cotton shirt and cotton shorts instead of fashionable clothes. I guess my mother wouldn?t be happy if I played football in an expensive shirt. It is true that some school uniforms look very boring. Many of them are made up of a shirt and trousers for boys, and a blouse and a skirt or a dress for girls. They are usually in boring colors as well, like grey, black, white and brown. Like you, I am also a young person who likes bright colors and fashionable clothes. However, we should pay attention to our studies during this important time in our lives. My father never wears a suit at home or at the weekend, but he wears one at the office every weekday. I know we want to feel happy at school and it is nice to be different. However, like my father, perhaps we should wear our favorite clothes only at home or at the weekend.

W: I?d like four kilos of ground beef, eight cartons of milk, and a two -kilo bag of potatoes. Oh, do you have any mayonnaise? M: Yes, we do. We have large and small jars. W: Okay, I?ll have three large jars of mayonnaise. Can I have everything delivered by 3 o?clock, please? M: Uh, is 3:30 all right? W: That?s fine. See you then. (After a while the phone rings again.) M: Bulk Buy Groceries. How may I help you? W: Oh, it?s Rachel from the Riviera Restaurant again. I?m sorry but I need to make a few changes to my order. M: Hold on, I?ll just get the order sheet. Now, what do you want to change? W: I think I said one two-kilo bag of potatoes. That should be five two-kilo bags. Oh, and could you add seven cooked chickens? M: Sorry, we only have frozen chickens. W: All right, I?ll have four. Is 3:30 still okay for delivery? M: Yes, we?ll see you then. (Text 10) M You may think that America is a free country. Well, it is, but if you kiss the wrong person, you might get into trouble. John, a six-year-old pupil in primary school, kissed one of his classmates, a little girl, on the cheek. The teacher saw it and told the headmaster. John was punished by being

told to leave his classroom and sit in another classroom by himself. When John?s mother found out about this, she was very angry. She asked why the school was punishing her son for kissing another six-year-old girl. “The girl asked him to kiss her and he did this just to show friendship. What?s wrong with that?” she said. The headmaster thinks that a boy kissing a girl is not appropriate, even though they are only six years old. “It is stated clearly in the student handbook. It is unwelcome behavior,” the headmaster said.
