Eighteen! In spite of the hopeless condition, two of the children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art. After many long discussions, the two boys finally worked out an agreement. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother who attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was excellent. By the time he graduated, he had earned considerable fees for his works. When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner to celebrate Albrecht’s triumphant homecoming, where Albrecht drank a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled him to fulfill his ambition. His closing words were, ―Now you can go to Nuremberg to look for your dream, and I will take care of you.‖ Tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side, Albert sobbed, ―No… no… no…no. It is too late for me. Look…look at what four years in the mines has done to my hands! I have been suffering from arthritis (关节炎) so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less draw delicate lines with a pen or a brush… For me, it is too late.‖ To show thanks to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother’s abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply ―Hands‖, but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed it ―The Praying Hands‖.
-4-

The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one – no one – no one ever makes it alone! 56. The reason why the two brothers worked out the agreement was that _______. A. they had no choice but to make a list B. their family was so poor that it couldn’t afford the academy C. one of the brothers deserved to go down to mines D. they wanted to think out a way to support the other sisters and brothers 57. Which of the following is NOT true about Albrecht Durer? A. He did perfectly well at the academy. B. He intended to support his brother after graduation. C. He didn’t begin to earn his living until his graduation. D. He created a masterpiece called ―The Praying Hands‖. 58. What does the end of the passage imply? A. One can achieve success through his individual hard work. B. Success totally depends on good luck and sacrifice. C. Success requires cooperation and contribution. D. No one could succeed without a leader. B Americans like to think of themselves as martyrs (烈士) to work. At this time of the year they admire the laziness of their European cousins, particularly the French. Studies show that the average American gets only four weeks of paid leave a year compared with seven for the French and eight for the German. In Paris many shops close down for August; in Washington, where the weather is really hot, they remain open, some for 24 hours a day. But when it comes to the young, the situation is just opposite. American children have it easier than most other children in the world, including the supposedly lazy European children. They have one of the shortest school years anywhere, a mere 180 days compared with an average of 195 for OECD countries and more than 200 for East Asian countries. German children spend 20 more days in school than American ones, and South Koreans over a month more. Over 12 years, a 15-day deficit (赤字) means American children lose out on 180 days of school, equal to an entire year. Americans also divide up their school time strangely. They cram (塞满) the school day into the morning and early afternoon, and close their schools for three months in the summer. The long summer vacation acts like a mental eraser, with the average child reportedly forgetting about a month’s worth of instruction in many subjects and almost three times that in mathematics. American academics have invented a term for this phenomenon, ―summer learning loss‖. It is leaving American children ill-equipped to compete. They usually perform poorly in international educational tests, coming behind Asian countries that spend less on education but work their children harder. California’s state universities have to send over a third of their classes to take some extra courses in English and math. 59. The main purpose of the first paragraph is to tell us ________. A. Americans needn’t be to hard-working B. Americans have a wrong way of working C. Americans work too hard D. Americans and Europeans have different working attitudes 60. According to the passage, European children ________.
-5-

A. have more pressure in their studies B. are usually considered to be lazy C. don’t need to work hard at their lessons D. are more diligent than American children 61. In the writer’s opinion, American children _________. A. are more creative than children from other countries B. are poorly equipped for the future C. can benefit much from the long vacation D. don’t make full use of their school time 62. During the long summer vacation, American children _________. A. will make up for their lost lessons B. spend most of the time learning C. probably don’t care about studies D. will suffer some memory problems 63. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The Less Diligent American Children B. The School Education in America C. The Work Attitude of Americans D. The Summer Holidays in America C HARBIN – A wild Siberian tiger was spotted on a forestry farm in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province on Sunday, forestry officials said Tuesday. The tiger, believed to have been hunting for a wild boar at the time, came face to face with several workers late in the afternoon on a forestry farm administered by the Dongfanghong Forestry Bureau (DFB) in the eastern part of the province, said an official with the provincial Forestry Industry Bureau. The farm is located on the scarcely populated Wandashan Mountain, where wild Siberian tigers have been spotted many times, but it was the first time for such an animal to come so close to human beings. ―We had just finished work in the forest when the tiger appeared.‖ said Shi Chun, one of the workers who saw the tiger. Upon seeing the animal, the workers rushed to their tractor to avoid possible attacks. The tiger followed the tractor for several hundred meters before going away. The tiger remained mild throughout the encounter, and the workers even managed to snap a few photos of it. The pictures, though blurry due to the darkened sky, show a Siberian tiger with white hair in its face. Local authorities on Monday checked the site where the big cat was spotted and found plum-shaped paw prints, which they believe belong to a grown wild Siberian tiger. Yang Lijuan, a wild animal protection official with the DFB, said the forestry farm is a good site for wild animal reproduction. ―The farm is in a zone where coniferous and broad-leaved trees grow, which provides much food for the tigers’ prey, such as a boar and deer.‖ she said. Siberian tigers, otherwise known as Amur or Manchurian tigers, mainly live in eastern Russia, northeast China and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is estimated that only about 500 currently live in the wild, with about twelve in Heilongjiang Province and eight to ten in neighboring Jilin Province. The DFB has stepped efforts to increase food for wild boar, roe deer and red deer in its forestry farms where Siberian tigers have been spotted to ensure enough prey for the endangered species. 64. Where can you find a wild Siberian tiger probably? A. Russia B. Australia C. South China D. Canada 65. The underlined word ―blurry‖ in the 4th paragraph has the closest meaning to ________. A. bright B. precious C. frightening D. unclear 66. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The DFB has stepped efforts to protect the tiger.
-6-

B. Farmers took photos of a Siberian Tiger. C. Wild Siberian Tiger spotted in Northeast China. D. The Forestry farm is home to Siberian tigers. D People often say that money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power. Ask anyone in business. They will tell you that it is a jungle out there. The expression probably began because the jungle is filled with wild animals and unknown dangers that threaten people. Sometimes people in business feel competing businesses are as dangerous as wild animals, and that unknown dangers in the business world threaten the survival of their business. Nobody is sure how the word got started. But it began to appear in American newspapers in the 1800s. A newspaper said a criminal whose name was Borghese wrote checks to people although he did not have enough money in the bank, and after that, he would flee from the town. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing. Americans shortened and changed the criminal’s name Borghese, to bogus. People trying to earn money also must be aware of being ripped off. A person ripped off has had something stolen, or at least has been treated very unfairly. It’s said that the expression was first used in 1971, on a sign that a student carried during a protest demonstration in a university. The message was that the student felt ripped off. And a successful person in business should work hard and try to get down to brass tacks. This expression means to get to the bottom or the most important part of something. For example, a salesman may talk a lot about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, ―It sounds good, but how much does it cost?‖ So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can prevent rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money in that jungle out there. And, some good luck will help, too. 67. Mentioning business world, people say ―it is a jungle out there‖ in that ________. A. it is not easy to earn enough money to travel in jungles B. business world, like jungles, is full of unknown dangers C. people in business will sometimes meet with failure like through jungles D. unknown dangers in the business world threaten their life 68. If consumers feel ripped off by an advertising company, we can say ________. A. they feel delighted B. they feel embarrassed C. they feel ashamed D. they feel cheated 69. Which of the following has the expression that is not properly used? A. Tourists complain of being ripped off by local cab drivers. B. Let’s make bogus investments. How much does this computer cost? C. I’m afraid I can give you only ten minutes’ time. Let’s get down to brass tacks at once. D. If people say that it is a jungle out there, there will be no rule and the situation will be dangerous. 70. How many expressions of business world are mentioned in the passage? A. 6 B. 5 C. 4 D. 3 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。

E Learn to Live in the Present Moment To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. 71 Without question, many of us have been used to spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things – all at once. 72 We also postpone our satisfaction, our priorities, and our happiness, often convincing ourselves that ―someday‖ will be better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental power that tells us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that ―someday‖ never actually arrives. John Lennon once said, ―Life is what’s happening while we’re busy making other plans.‖ When we’re busy making ―other plans‖, our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. 73 Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal (带妆彩排) for some later date. It isn’t. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. 74 Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future — we won’t have enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever. 75 Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your efforts will pay off. A. When our attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. B. We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. C. Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is a history, only today is a gift, and that is why we call today is the present. D. Most of us are used to resting hope on future, ignoring the present moment. E. Living in the present moment is where you are always, regardless of what happened yesterday, and what may or may not happen tomorrow. F. In short, we miss out on life. G. To get over fear, the best strategy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Dear British friends, Welcome to Beijing.
