白蚁之害
你知道白蚁之害吗?一座大厦如果有了白 蚁,不加防治,不到十年时间,里面的地板壁 板,都会蛀蚀一空。一般的房屋受了严重的蚁 害,有的还会突然倒塌下来,伤了性命。电杆 被白蚁蛀蚀,一般两三年就要换一次。船只有 了白蚁,轻的会将货物蛀烂,重的会使船沉没。 铁路枕木如果受白蚁侵蚀,火车就有出轨的危 险。白蚁这种害虫,实在是相当可恶的。在我 们的社会里,则有另一种“白蚁”。前些日子 报载吉林省外贸局副局长王震宇利用职权,大 慷国家之慨,吃喝玩乐,请客送礼,浪费惊人, 不也是一种“白蚁”之害吗?

? The Destructiveness of Termites
? Have you heard of destruction by termites? If a tall building were infested with termites and nothing were done to prevent and control them, the entire wooden floor and wall paneling inside it would have been eaten away in less than ten years . Some of the ordinary houses damaged by termites might collapse, causing casualties. Wire poles would have to be replaced at two or three years’ interval due to damage by termites. If slightly damaged by termite eating, goods on a boat might decay; if heavily damaged, the boat might sink. If railway sleepers were eaten away by termites, trains would be in danger of running off the track. What annoying pests termites are! However, there is another kind of “termites” in our society. According to a recent press report, Wang Zhenyu, former vice director of Jilin Foreign Trade Bureau, abused his power by squandering a grotesque amount of money wining , dining, holding dinner parties, giving gifts and seeking other pleasures, all at the expense of the state. Isn’t he as destructive as “termites” too?

? 污染已成为问题,因为在当今人口越来越多,社会越来越工业化的世 界上,人类正在污染他们居住的环境。许多科学家认为人类最大的错 误是把发展和进步等同起来。现在人们以怀疑的态度看待“发展性” 的产业,因为它们的副作用会破坏环境,破坏各种生命之间的关系。 人口的增长导致对世界上有限的空气、水和土地的需求不断增长。伴 随着人口增长的是越来越多的人渴望更高的生活水平。于是对电、水 和商品的更大需求必然造成有更多的废物要处理。这个问题已经引起 人们对生物及其环境的日益关注。许多人认为,人类没有尽快地解决 这一问题,却只顾谋求私利,以致于到了无可挽救的地步以后才充分 认识到这种兵贵神速。

Pollution is a problem because man in an increasingly populated and industrialized world is upsetting the environment in which he lives.2) Many scientists maintain that one of man’s greatest errors has been to equate growth with advancement. 3) Now “growth” industries are being looked on with suspicion in case their side effects damage the environment and disrupt the relationship of different forms of life.4) The growing population makes increasing demands on the world’s fixed supply of air water and land.5) This rise in population is accompanied by the desire of more and more people for a better standard of living, in an ever increasing amount of waste material to be disposed of.6) The problem has been causing increasing concern to living things and their environment.7) Many believe that man is not solving these problems quickly enough and that his selfish pursuit of possessions takes him past the point of no return before he fully appreciates the damage.

? 正是因为不停地追求进取,我们才感到生 活幸福。一件事完成后,另一件随之而来 ,如此连绵不绝,永无止境。对于往前看 的人来说,眼前总有一番新天地。虽然我 们蜗居于这颗小行星上,整日忙于锁事且 生命短暂,但我们生来就有不尽的希望, 如天上繁星,遥不可及。只要生命犹在, 希望便会不止。真正的幸福在于怎样开始 ,而不是如何结束,在于我们的希翼,而 并非拥有。

? We live in an ascending scale when we live happily, one thing leading to another in an endless series. There is always a new horizon for onward-looking men, and although we dwell on a small planet, immersed in petty business and not enduring beyond a brief period of years, we are so constituted that our hopes are inaccessible, like stars, and the term of hoping is prolonged until the term of life. To be truly happy is a question of how we begin and not of how we end, of what we want and not of what we have.

? Icebergs are among nature's most spectacular creations, and yet most people have never seen one. A vague air of mystery envelops them. They come into being -- somewhere -- in faraway, frigid waters, amid thunderous noise and splashing turbulence, which in most case no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just as unnoticed. Objects of sheerest beauty they have been called.

? Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green or purple, tinted faintly or in darker hues. They are graceful, stately, inspiring -- in calm, sunlight seas. But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and that they are -- in the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear weather one is wise to stay a safe distance away from them.
