Using language (II)

Where is San Francisco?

San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 12th most populous city in the United States. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States and is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the larger San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.4 million people. San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination known for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable cars, and Chinatown.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County. It is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Angel Island

Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay that offers expansive views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin County Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. The entire island is included within Angel Island State Park and is administered by California State Parks. The island has been used for a variety of purposes, including a US Bureau of Immigration inspection and detention facility. The Angel Island Immigration Station on the northeast corner of the island, where officials detained, inspected, and examined approximately one million immigrants, has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

a conveyance for passengers cable car or freight on a cable railway

The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually (手动地) operated cable car system. An icon of San Francisco, California, the cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway, or "Muni" as it is better known. While the cable cars are used to a certain extent by commuters, the vast majority of their 7 million annual passengers are tourists. The cable cars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

San Francisco Chinatown

San Francisco Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia as well as the oldest Chinatown in North America. It is one of the top tourist attractions in San Francisco. Since its establishment in 1848, it has been highly important and influential in the history and culture of ethnic Chinese immigrants in North America. Chinatown is an enclave (被包围的领土) that continues to retain (保持) its own customs, languages, places of worship, social clubs, and identity.

Fisherman’s Wharf a neighborhood and popular tourist attraction

San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf gets its name and neighborhood characteristics from the city's early days of the mid to later 1800s when Italian immigrant fishermen came to the city by the bay to take advantage of the influx (涌入) of population due to the gold rush.

1. Why did Andrew Hallidie invent the cable car system? He invented the cable car system because the horse-drawn trams used before were unsafe. 2. Where did George eat lunch on his first day in San Francisco? He ate at Fisherman’s Wharf.

3. Why did George hire a car? Why do you think he joined up with Terri and Peter? It was convenient for him to tour around the city. It was cheaper to hire a car with other people because they could share the cost. Also he probably enjoyed being in the company of other tourists.

4. What three things can visitors do in Chinatown? Eat in Chinese restaurants, go to markets, visit temples and museums. 5. What is Angel Island famous for? It was famous as a place for immigrants to be checked before they could enter California.
