第三部分:阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40 分) 阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。 A When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker(股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek already two week long.” And then, in prefect English I said, “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.” The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world. 51. Why was the author’s mother poorly served? A. She was unable to speak good English. misunderstood. C. She was not clearly heard. A. they forgave the stockbroker C. they went to New York immediately once 53. What does the author think of her mother’s English now? A. It confuses her. C. It helps her understand the world. B. It embarrassed her. D. It helps her tolerate D. She was not very polite. B. they failed to get the check D. they spoke to their boss at 52. After the author made the phone call, __________. B. She was often

-5-

rude people. 54. We can infer from the passage that Chinese English _________. A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers C. has a very bad reputation in America D. may bring inconvenience in America B How to improve my life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They'll say, "This is my fate, my destiny. I cannot change it." Of course not! You don't have to suffer needlessly. Your destiny depends on you, not on any other external factors. I know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows. Huh! Is this what she calls "doing her best"? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that God has intended for her to live; that her luck can only change if God wills it. Of course God wants us to be happy and live our life to the fullest, but we have to do our share of exerting(运 用) the effort to live the life of our dreams. Remember that you reap what you sow. You just don't sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky. You have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the TV screen, and get your hands off the phone. Don’t expect your luck to change unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don't just regard it as a temporary setback; but use it as feedback. Learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It's not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively. If someone's life is in the trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don't just stand (or sit) there, do something to improve your life. 55. According to the woman mentioned in Para.3, her life ____________. A. doesn't need improving B. couldn't be improved C. will be better some day D. will be worse in the future 56. Which of the following statements is the author's opinion? A. Your temporary problem is not discouraging. B. You should treat yourself in the way you treat friends. C. You can only achieve success when God wills it. D. Your luck can be changed by your efforts 57. In Para.5, the author stressed the importance of _____________. A. positive action B. positive thinking C. hope for the best D. intention to succeed 58. The text is mainly written to advise you to ____________.
-6-

A. change your normal routine C. improve your life

B. understand yourself D. believe in yourself

C As summer comes near, many children are really happy to forget about school for a few months. However, studies have found that children typically forget between one and three months’ worth of school learning during the summer months. Spelling and math abilities suffer the most, while reading is not really influenced by the time off. The most probable reason for this is that most children read at least occasionally outside of the classroom, whether newspapers, magazines, books, or video game guides. However, their math and spelling skills only get exercised in the school setting. The original purpose of summer vacations was to let farm children have time off to help work in the fields in the high growing season, but this reason does not exist any longer since fewer kids actually work on farms today. Some cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles, have moved to a year-round school calendar, which may help reduce the academic decline(下降) that occurs during the long summer vacation. Most cities still use the normal nine and a half-month calendars. To improve skills and to maintain(维持) a good level of preparation, experts suggest trips to museums, summer camps, and visits to libraries to keep kids mentally active and interested throughout the summer. There are other educational systems that provide vacations while still keeping students’ skills sharp. For example, in Japan students attend class for seven weeks continuously, followed by two weeks of vacation. This continues throughout the year. In Italy, students attend class six days per week, but finish at 1:30 PM each day, so that school does not rule their life the way that it does in America. Educational specialists fear that the three-month summer vacation stops the continuity(持续) of learning. Just as students become accustomed to new concepts (概念) in reading, writing, or critical thinking skills, they “shut down” for an long period. When they go back to school after the long summer vacation, they take up to two months to return to their previous level of understanding. And so the debate continues: whether to continue the present vacations or to seek changes. 59. Spelling and math abilities suffer the most during the summer months because children _____. A. take the summer vacation too seriously B. have to help work in the fields C. don’t like spelling and math D. do little work of math or spelling 60. What can be learned from the passage? A. Students read in summer vacations. B. Nowadays no children work on farm in summer vacations. C. The United States has no summer vacations now. D. The nine and a half-month calendars help improve skills. 61. What is one of the advantages of Japan and Italy’s educational systems? A. They provide students with shorter vacations every year. B. The students have more free time of their own to play.
-7-

C. They offer vacations without affecting students’ skills. D. The students attend classes for longer time every week. 62. What is the best title for the passage? A. How to Spend Summer Vacations. B. No More Summer Vacations. C. Summer Vacations: Change or Not D. New Educational Systems Needed D A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults. But the degree to which TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4,000 adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995. As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched every day. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use added up to an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV. Seven years later, in 2002, more than seven per cent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. says every extra hour of television meant an eight per cent increase He in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use. Doctor Primack says the study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence. The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives.Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, attend religious services and to vote. 63.According to the first paragraph, what remains unsolved in the new study? A.Whether teenagers are influenced by TV. B.Who is more likely to be influenced by TV. C.How much teenagers are depressed by TV. D.What should be done to help to help the teenagers.
-8-

64.What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph? A.Depression is not related to the use of other media than TV. B.Every extra hour of media uses increases the chance of depression. C.Longer use of media other than TV doesn’t increase the chance of depression. D. influence of movies, video games and radio on depression varies respectively. The 65.In the last sentence of the eighth paragraph, “It” refers to . A.depression B.lack of activities C.watching TV D.the result of the study 66.The study done by the sociologists from the University of Maryland was mainly intended to . A.tell the difference between happy and unhappy people B.prove the relationship between TV and depression C.provide a happy recipe(秘方)for all people D.stress the importance of being socially active E An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe (贿赂), but is close to it. All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices---just about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed. There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “apple-polishing” --“soft-soaping” or “buttering-up”. A gift is just one way to “soft-soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise --- telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is. Endless are the ways of flattery(奉承). Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who gets so little of it. We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But we just receive it for its food value and nourishment, as a cat receives milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves. Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to the endless sickening flattery of his courtiers (朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless power. He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery was. 67. Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple-polishing” ? A. A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks. B. An employee tells his boss how good he is at management. C. A captain is said to be of limitless power by his followers. D. A teacher praised his students for their talent and wisdom.
