“Notre Dame,” it said. “Big envelope!” Mike, a senior at a Californian high school, shouted with joy. The big envelope meant that the excellent university in Indiana had offered him a place in its Class of 2013. But the $51,300 annual fee is a big obstacle. So Mike and his parents are considering offers from several other colleges and are calculating the costs of tuition, housing and holiday trips home. This year, money is the driving factor for a growing number of high school seniors, who have to decide what colleges to attend this fall. Less jobs and plunging house prices have changed family spending. “We’re excited that Mike got into eight great schools,” said Mike’s father, an engineer at Microsoft. “But if you consider going to school out of state, you’ve got to think about all of the other costs: moving, flying back and forth for the holidays. You’re looking at about $3,000 a year, just for travel.” As families weigh their choices, some are going back to financial aid offices hoping help packages can be increased. Rachel Brown was happy to get a thick envelope from New York University (NYU). Although she has always wanted to live in Manhattan, she is seriously considering the University of California San Diego (UCSD), because of the high cost in New York. “The tuition for NYU is twice as much as UCSD,” said Rachel, 17. “My mom doesn’t want me to have a big debt when I graduate, and I don’t want that either. I’d have to take out a loan of $15,000. I’ll check and see if there’s any way that NYU can offer me any financial aid.” More than 7.6 million American students have filled out the Free Application for Students Aid, a 19.9 percent increase over last year. This month the Federal Department of Education urged college financial aid officers to give more help to certain families. A record 30,428 students applied for 2,300 places at Stanford, partly because the university increased financial aid for families earning below $10,000. 56. Mike may give up Notre Dame because of ______. A. travel fees B. financial concerns C. poor exam results D. worries about living far away from home 57. The phrase “Big envelope” in paragraph 2 probably refers to “______”. A. A text message B. A large gift package C. An admission letter D. A scholarship letter 58. The passage mainly focuses on ______. A. the calculation of different costs including tuition B. the extremely hard financial situation in America C. the excitement of students’ being able to enter ideal colleges D. the financial crisis of families over college entrance B Students must apply for a place before attending any class. Applications( 申请), either by post or in person, are dealt with strictly in the order they are received at the Adult Education Office.
5

You can apply: BY POST-Use the card provided with the exact fee. You'll be accepted on the course unless it is full, in which case we will inform you. Students should note that popular classes may be full well before the course is to start, so that early application is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. For the AUTUMN TERM, applications will be accepted by post (preferably) or in person from 1st August. For the SPRING TERM, applications will be accepted from 1st December. For the SUMMER TERM, applications will be accepted from 1st April. 59.Students who apply to the college by post will ________ . C It is one of the greatest mysteries of nature. In case you haven’t noticed, all living things follow very definite, individual rhythms, all as regular as a clock, but what makes them regular? Though many scientists maintain that these rhythms are the result of some outside force like gravity or radiation or both, the results of most scientific researches agree with other scientists who believe that each living thing has its own built-in biological “time clock.” Take the mystery of migration for example. Scientists can ’t really explain why many species of birds migrate in the autumn even though the temperature is still summery. The birds just seem to snub the comfortable weather that they are having. When a certain time comes, they travel south by the thousand. In spring time, they migrate northwards even
6

though there probably is snow still covering the ground when they finally arrive. Something said “go,” and they did. Animals that hibernate (冬眠) are obeying individual time clocks, too. When their clock indicates the time to take a winter ’s nap, they do, and nothing can stop them. At a certain time in the spring, they wake up and come out regardless of the weather outside. Plants appear to have yearly rhythms, such as the sprouting of seeds, and they also have daily rhythms. Notice sometimes that plants raise their leaves in daylight and lower them at night. If you live along the California coast, you can easily observe a demonstration of this mysterious clock functioning regularly. There, from February to September, the highest tides occur exactly every fourteen and four-fifths days, and during these high tides, but at no other time, small silvery fish called grunions surf-ride a wave to the beach. There the female deposits her eggs in the sand and the male fertilizes them; then both hitch a wave-ride back to the sea. Exactly fourteen and four-fifths days later, never before or after, the tiny eggs hatch, and the high tide carries the new babies out to sea. 62. According to the passage, the mysterious rhythms result from______. A. the influence of gravity on living species B. the effect of radiation on living species C. the influence of a mysterious outer force on living species D. the internal mechanism inside the living species 63. The underlined word "snub" in the third paragraph probably means______. A. fight B. ignore C. symbolize D. criticize 64. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE? A. Hibernating animals are obeying an internal time clock. B. The positioning of the leaves of some plants is due to the daily rhythms. C. The internal clock functioning is demonstrated in the reproducing habits of grunions. D. The yearly hibernation is more because of the weather influence than the biological functioning. 65. The passage is mainly about____________. A. the rhythms of life B. the reasons of mysterious hibernation C. strange behaviors of species D. the timing for different events in the world of species

Protection of Environment Environment protection has become a very serious problem. The population of the world is increasing so rapidly that the world has become too crowded. The overuse of our natural resources has influenced ecological balance. Moreover, the smoke and harmful chemicals from the factories have polluted our environment. If this trend continues, human life on the earth will be threatened.
9

Great progress has been made in environment protection. Governments of many countries have made laws to protect the environment. Many factories have taken efforts to deal with various kinds of pollution. Still more measures should be taken to solve this problem. People should be further educated to realize the importance of environment protection. They should use modern methods to control population growth and learn to recycle our natural resources. If we do so, we are sure that in the future we will have a better and cleaner planet.
