高一英语上学期阅读理解 10 篇(三) (一)
It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No,I do not.Observe for yourself Ads on fashion TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets.Whether they have realized it or not, women are surrounded(包围)by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth? But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks.A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called “aunt” or “granny” can still keep up her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability,a kind heart, great courage, concern for others, etc. In addition, and young, old beautiful and ugly are relative concept. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Interested in new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly(简朴地)dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful.Good books ale rich soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks. 1.According to the first paragraph, why are women caught by a sea of fashion? A.Because they are rich.B.Because they are taught to follow any fashion. C.Because they don’t dare to look attractive. D.Because they think that they will look youthful and charming with beautiful clothes. 2.Which is more important to a woman in the author’s opinion? A.Richness of one’s mind. B.Looks.C.Following the fashion. D.Wealth. 3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The richness of women’s minds proves to be more beautiful than their looks. B.A woman who may be called“aunt”is no longer beautiful. C.A woman who has experienced many troubles may still keep up her beauty. D.It is not necessary for women to show their beauty though their beautiful clothes. 4.What is the best way for a woman to appear young according to the writer? A.Dressing up. B.Reading and learning. C.Feeding the flower. D.Making up. (二) The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety. That didn’t stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess. Parbati Barua’s father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up—how to catch wild elephants. Parbati hasn’t always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life. “Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the Chase,” she says. But Parbati doesn’t catch elephants just for fun. “My work,” she says,“is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man. ”And this is exactly what Parbati has

been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill. The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. “Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,” she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed ! l. For Parbati, catching elephants is mainly to_____________. A. get long lasting excitement B. keep both man and elephants safe C. send them back to the jungle D. make the angry elephants tame 2. Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they fight back because______ . A. they are caught and sent for heavy work B. illegal hunters capture them and kill them C. they are attacked and their land gets limited D dogs often bark at them and chase them 3. The passage starts with an elephant story in order to explain that in India___ . A. people easily fall victim to elephants’ attacks B. the man-elephant relationship is getting worse C. elephant tamers are in short supply D. dogs are as powerful as elephants (三) For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrel on unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress. 1. Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict? A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end. 2. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.

B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents. 3. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to__________. A. give orders to the other C. gain respect from the other B. know more than the other D. get the other to behave properly B. Examples of the parent-teen war

4. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems D. Future of the parent-teen relationship (四) Wearing shabby clothes and stretching out a dirty hand towards people, this is the traditional image of beggars. But nowadays that image has changed in many ways. Beggars can even look exactly like a white-collar worker. With the development of the Internet, beggars also benefit from new technology. Without standing on the street all day long, they can just sit at home and click the keyboard -- "beggar websites" make the begging business much easier. Just by googling the words beggar and website, dozens of such Chinese forums are found. "Please donate 1 yuan; it will help me be rich!" -- that's a common slogan from many of these begging websites. The layout of these sites is quite similar. There are some funny or tragic pictures across the top of the screen, then a request for donations is classified into three levels. 1 yuan, 5 yuan and 10 yuan. Just by clicking on these buttons, one can make a kindly donation. People can pay through an online paying system or send money to a bankcard number. These websites also provide lists of those who have donated, but almost all of them have mostly donated 1 yuan per person, and online stores or other small websites can have a place on the site for a small advertisement after the donation. Actually, such begging websites are not original in China. Online begging first appeared in the United States. Some individuals opened such websites to relieve their economic embarrassment. In 2002, a woman in New York owed about $20,000 to the bank, so she set up a begging website and, what a surprise, she received over $13,000 from netizens which solved her problems more or less. In some "professional" begging websites in the United States, the website organizer can even receive many thousands of dollars. However, the income from most of the web sites found in China seems not so good. 1. The passage is mainly about __. A. the difference between traditional and modern beggars B. the begging website C. considerable donations online D. how to make money online 2. What can we conclude from the passage? A. We can make a good living by begging online. B. Western begging websites always make more money than those in China. C. Begging websites can advertise for donators. D. Online begging came into being in China first. 3. By what means can people donate money to the online websites?

A. People can pay in cash. B. People can pay through online paying systems. C. People can pay by check. D. All the above means. 4. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Some begging websites use the donations to help poor people. B. Some begging websites solve their financial problems by receiving donations. C. The improvement of the Internet technology helps beggars make money more easily. D. We can find Chinese begging websites by googling some key words. (五) I know what you’re thinking:pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a. m. if you want to. I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saving” calories 卡路里) still others just ( , don’t like breakfast food. But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all, ”says Katherine Brooking, R. D.,who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece. Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal. So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself', “You can always eat it tomorrow, ”I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. a four-hour jog with 40 dogs—dogs large and small, young and old. Amazingly, most of those dogs belong to him. The rest are at the heart of his work; they are troubled dogs sent to Millan to learn good behavior. Obviously Millan, star of the TV show Dog Whisperer and author of the best-selling book Cesar’s Way, has a special gift for working with these animals. Growing up on a farm in Mexico, Millan knewhe wanted to work with dogs. His first job, at age 15, was helping a veterinarian(兽医). He was so good at calming scared dogs and handling all kinds of situations that people started calling him“el perrero”, Spanish for“the dog boy”. Since then, he has built a rewarding career around his favorite animal. “My grandfather taught me at an earl age not to work against nature”, he explains.“In nature, dogs are pack animals. They form a group and follow one leader. Millan’s specialty is teaching people to be pack leaders for their dogs. Studying dogs on the farm where he grew up, Millan realised they need lots of exercise to be calm. He explains his approach, “Exercise and discipline first, and then affection!” He says a lot of people get it backwards because they don’t realise what dogs really need. Therefore, while he trains dogs, he teaches owners to understand that their pets need rules. He’s helped famous people like Oprah Winfrey and movie star will Smith and everyday people too. To find the right career, Millan encourages kids to do what they enjoy.“A lot of people don’t realise I’ve been working with dogs for more than 20 years—long before my TV show or book. starry sky above. The senior villager, obeying the tradition passed down from forefathers, took out three blocks of salt and threw them into the campfire, probably to predict the changes of weather in the mountains. All eagerly waited for the old man’s“weather report”:if the salt in the fire produced crackling sound, they would have good weather in store;if no sound was produced,it then meant the good weather would soon end and a storm would come at any moment. The senior villager looked serious. The salt in the campfire made no sound at all. Convinced by this bad sign,he urged(催促)the whole team to set out immediately after daybreak.A young man in the group, however, insisted that they should not start in such a hurry, considering it superstitious to“forecast weather by using salt. It was not until the next afternoon that the young man caught up on the wisdom of the old man when the weather suddenly changed, with cold winds blowing and a snowstorm raging. In fact, the method used by the clan head could be well explained by modem science:whether or not salt produces sound in campfire depends on air humidity(湿度).
