We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too. One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous. Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away. Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
2

21. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child? A. Staying on the farm B. Moving to the countryside C. Leaving home for the city D. Running away from the school 22. Which of the following is true about the writer? A. He is very old now. B. He is in good health. C. He prefers driving a car. D. He lives in the city now. 23. In the passage, the writer tries to _______. A. express his opinions about way of life B. describe his life in the countryside C. show an interest in the outside world D. persuade the reader to live in the city 24. How is the passage mainly developed? A. By inferring B. By comparing C. By listing examples D. By giving explanations B Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins. People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions(排放)vehicles,” but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it.Aside from the few folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机) . Generators are fueled by something — usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热 的)plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. It's just because the coal is burned somewhere else , so it looks clean. It is not. It’s as if the California greens are covering their eyes—“If I can’t see it, it’s not happening.” Gasoline is an unbelievably efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it.But when you take that gas(or another fuel)and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc. A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far — so electric cars burn more fuel than gas-powered ones.If our electricity came mostly from nukes, or geothermal, or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don’t use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars’ batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾) and finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it’s a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot. 25. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Electric cars are not clean at all B. Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones C. People have doubts about electric cars’ batteries D. Gasoline is an effective way to power a vehicle 26. The underlined words “ be clueless” mean___________ A. know nothing B. have confidence C. feel excited D. be pleased
3

27. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run ________ A. not less than 25 miles B. as far as 50 miles C. as far as 25 miles D. not more than 25 miles 28. According to the passage, electric cars__________ A. are more environmentally friendly B. burn more fuel than gas-powered ones C. are very good at cleaning up D. are poisonous for a long time C When I was young I wanted to be a model,so when a national contest was staged,I convinced my parents to take me for an audition( 试 演 ). I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only$900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的)modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At l 3, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go.We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed. I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model.I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines! Of course, I wasn’ t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5'9” (about 1.75metres)I could be a success.I prayed for a growth spurt(冲刺)because I could not imagine giving up my dream.I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded$500 for classes.$500 for a photo shoot and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging. The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’ t receive a call, I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City.We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting.only to be told that I was too short.I was devastated(感到难以承受的). Years later,I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and 1 was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future. 29.What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model? A.She won a national contest. B.She wanted to get reputation and wealth. C.She was urged by some modeling agencies. D.She had full potential to be a successful model. 30.What’s the author’s parents’attitude toward her dream? A.Encouraging. B.Worried. C.Doubtful.D.Enthusiastic. 31.What was it that made the author end her attempt to become a model? A.Her parents were strongly against it. B.She realized that it was impossible for her. C.Even a local modeling agency turned her down. D.She didn’t actually love the idea of modeling.

D Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have. The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor but sensitivity when it matters. Also that friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend. Even the strongest friends can still have arguments, although usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual teenage childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect a friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do ? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, whereas a bad example of a friend would simply shrug(耸肩) and turn a blind eye. Not only the bad things affect friendship ---- good activities do too. Such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other, which indicates a good ability to communicate. This is a key aspect of a good friendship. Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16. Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend. I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends you will have no happiness. 32. According to the author, true friendship _______. A. is easy to get B. deepens with time C. needs management D. affects one’s happiness 33. Paragraph 3 is mainly about______. A. why drugs are bad for teenagers B. problems that will test friendship C. ways that help avoid arguments D. whether a friend is trustworthy 34. According to the author, which matters least in friendship? A. Age. B. Sensitivity. C. Sense of humor. D. Communication ability. 35. Which of the following saying can match the author’s view on friendship? A. Old friends and old wines are best. B. A friend without faults will never be found. C. A life without a friend is a life without the sun. D. a friend to everybody is a friend to nobody. There are all sorts of good sensible reasons to avoid getting angry. Not only does it make us feel bad, it also makes us do stupid things without noticing the risks and it can be self-destructive ( 毁坏性的). ___ 36____ But like all emotions, anger has its purposes, which can
5

be used for good effects. Anger is a motivating force. In fact anger itself is a kind of positive energy and a powerful motivating force. ___ 37 When we see something as beneficial, we want it more when we are angry. So, when used right, constructive anger can make us feel strong and powerful and help push us on to get what we want. 38 It may sound like a strange thing to say, but angry people have something in common with happy people. That's because both tend to expect favorable results. By comparison those experiencing more fear are more pessimistic (悲观的) about the future and expect further terrors. Anger can benefit relationships. Society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it .The problem is that when we hide our anger, our partner doesn't know he's done something wrong. And so he keeps doing it. 39 The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution, can actually benefit and strengthen relationships. Anger provides self-understanding. Anger can also provide understanding into ourselves, if we allow it. Getting angry leads to a positive outcome. Anger help discover our own faults. If we can notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives. _____40 A. And that doesn't do our relationship any good. B. Anger can turn us on and thus push on towards our goals in the face of problems and barriers. C. Anger reduces violence. D. Angry people are more optimistic. E. Most of us treat our anger as though it's unreasonable, unshowable and unmentionable. F. That's because it's a very strong social signal that a situation needs to be solved. G. Anger can encourage self-change. 第二节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 l.5 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意。然后从各题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 If you’re going to do something,my dad used to say,do it right.
