(1) Optical Fiber Communication The optical commutations system is essentially based on the use of optical fibers. Fundamental optical communication system construction is shown as Fig.18. Optical fiber cable functions as a transmission medium in the optical communications system. A light source converting electrical signals to optical signals (E/O converting) is set in the


transmitter side. An optical detector reconverting transmitted optical signals to electrical signals (O/E converter) is set in the receiver side. Thus, the light source and detector element, as well as optical fiber are functionally important devices in the optical communications system.

A semiconductor light source emits optical power when passing an electrical current through a junction. This junction is formed inside the semiconductor element. Therefore, optical output can be easily modulated by adjusting the electric current according to signals to be transmitted. The semiconductor detector absorbs optical power, exciting electrons in the detector. This process results in optical signal conversion to electrical signal current. The use of optical fibers presents many advantages, such as: less loss, light weight, wide band, flexibility, etc. ●Optical fiber loss is lower than PEF (Polyethylene foam ) or coaxial cable, and millimeter waveguide. Low loss values of less than 1 dB/km are attained in the 1.0 to 1.7um wavelength region, excluding the 1.4um wavelength. ●Optical cables are lighter than other cables, increasing installation simplicity and decreasing costs. ●Optical fiber transmission capacity is larger than any other cable. Since transmission capacity varies from a small to a large number of channels, optical fiber system design is flexible. It is applicable to virtually all fields currently using conventional communications systems. Silica, the main material used in optical fibers is not an electrical conduction. Thus, risk of electromagnetic induction, wave interference, and voltage difference between grounding points does not exist. This advantage enables expansion of cable applications. (2) Charge, Current and Voltage As we know, matter is made up of atoms, which are composed of a number of fundamental particles. Normally the atom is electrically neutral, the negative charge of the electrons balancing the positive charge of the protons. Particles may become negatively charged by gaining electrons from other particles. As an example, we may produce a negative charge on a balloon by rubbing it against our hair. The balloon will then stick to a wall or the ceiling, which are uncharged. Relative to the negatively charged balloon the neutral wall and ceiling are oppositely charged. We now define the coulomb (C) by stating that the charge of an electron is a negative one of 1.60218×10-19 coulombs. Putting it another way, a coulomb is the charge of about 6.24×1018 electrons. The symbol for charge will be taken as Q or q. The primary purpose of an electric circuit is to move or transfer charges along specified paths. “intensite”. Finally, current is the time rate of change of charge, given by i=dq/dt. The basic unit of current is the ampere (A). An ampere is 1 coulomb per second. However, if we want some concerted motion on their part, we must apply a so-called electromotive force (EMF).Thus work is done on the charges. We shall define voltage “across” an element as the work done in moving a unit charge (+1C) through the element from one terminal to the other.
