We, able-bodied people, should treat the disabled with love. However, love is far from enough.

?The disabled people may meet with many embarrassing situations.
? What should we do to help them live an independent life?

Never feel sorry for them. Never look down upon them. Never make fun of them. Don’t ignore them.
Accept them for who they are.

Treat them with equality.
Give them encouragement to live a colorful life.

Design and build public buildings which are accessible to them.

Make a difference in their daily life.

Look at the pictures on Page7. Discuss the problems that people with walking difficulties might have in a cinema.

The problem in picture 1:

The buttons in the lift are beyond his reach.
Solution: replace the buttons, making them easier to reach

The problem in picture 2:

The seats are inaccessible to people in wheelchairs.
Solution: set aside a special space at the end of each row

The toilets are not convenient to people with walking difficulties.
Solution: adapt the height of the toilets to people in wheelchairs

Sample writing
Dear Mr. Smith, I read in the newspaper that you are to be the architect for the new downtown supermarket. I am writing to ask you to consider the matter of easy use of the supermarket by people in wheelchairs. In particular, I would like you to consider the following things: 1. Width of passages. Can you please make sure that the passages are wide enough to allow wheelchairs to pass through. In some supermarkets the passages are so narrow that a person in a wheelchair can not move along them easily.

2. Height of shelves. Can you please design shelves that can be reached by people in wheelchairs. In most supermarkets people in wheelchairs have to ask other shoppers to help them, which takes away their independence. 3. Lifts to all floors. Lifts should be in places that people in wheelchairs can get to easily. It is especially difficult if lifts are right at the back of the shop and people have to go up and down before they get to them. 4 Car parking. I hope you will reserve some car spaces close to the front of the shop for people in wheelchairs so that they don’t have to park a long way from the shopping areas and wheel themselves over rough ground to the entrance.

I would appreciate it if you could spare some time to read my letter. I hope from the bottom of my hear my suggestions will meet with your approval. Disabled people should have the same opportunities as ablebodied people to shop independently and to do so with dignity. I am sure many people will admire your supermarket if you design it with good access for disabled people. In the meantime, the supermarket owners will also be satisfied as they will make higher profits with more people shopping there. Yours sincerely, Julia
