It was my mother who paid for my school fees.” Then the director wondered where the mother worked. Carl said his mother worked as a clothes cleaner. And the director requested him to show his hands. Dear Sir, Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo Books Ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed to be a “remarkable” price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare’s plays and poems for some time, and these books in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them. Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a six-book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. I wrote to you at the end of August of last year. You did not reply to that letter. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks. The books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside. I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now on until the Last Judgment, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me. Please send no more books, send no more bills, and send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid. Yours faithfully, Simon Walker 54. The advertisement that Mr. Walker saw in the Morning Mail was for ______. A. fifteen pounds and fifty pence B. an unlimited number of Cosmo Books

Simon Walker wrote this letter to _______. A. show his anger to Cosmo Books Ltd. B. complain about getting books he didn’t want C. advise readers not to order books from Cosmo Books Ltd. D. ask for the final solution to the problem with the unwanted books.
For anyone who is determined to be a fashion designer, it is not enough to have succeeded in college. The real test is whether they can survive, and become established during their early 20s, making a name for themselves in the real world where business skills can be as important as talent and creativity. Fashion is a hard business. There is a continuous amount of stress because work is at a constant and extremely fast speed to prepare for the next season’s collections. It is extremely competitive and there is the constant need to make attractive advertisements of the latest fashion in newspapers and magazines. It also requires continual freshness because the appetite for new ideas is hard to satisfy. “We try to warn people before they come to us about how tough it is.” says Lydia Kemeny, the Head of Fashion at St. Martin’s School of Art in London. “And we point out that drive and determination are absolutely necessary.” This may seem far removed from the popular opinions of fashionable young people spending their time designing pretty dresses. That may well be what they do in their first year of study but a good college won’t be slow in introducing students to commercial realities. “We don’t walk our foot on the blossoming(绽放的)flower of creativity but in the second year we start introducing the restrictions of price, producing ability, marketing and so on.” Almost all fashion design is done to a belief. It is not a form of self-expression as such, although there is certainly room for imagination and creativity. Most young designers are going to end up as employees of a producer or a fashion house and they still need to be able to work within the characteristic style of their employer. Even those students who are most modern in their own taste of clothes may need to adapt to producing designs which are right for the mainstream of market. They also have to be able to work at both the expensive and the cheap end of the market and the challenge to produce good design inexpensively may well be demanding. 57. Which of the following is mainly discussed in the passage? A. Talent in fashion. B. Good marks at college. C. Ability to create new designs. D. Business skills in fashion industry. 58. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A. Fashion designers are highly motivated and really determined. B. Good preparations for the next season can reduce stress. C. Consumers’ appetite for new ideas keeps changing. D. Advertisement business is very competitive. 59. How does St. Martin’s School of Art train her students of fashion? A. To expose students to the real fashion industry in the second year. B. To warn the new students not to design freely with imagination. C. To demand students to make pretty dresses for companies. D. To offer commercial courses for the new students. 60. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Lydia Kemeny’s opinion. B. The competitive business world. C. The warning to the young designers. D. The real situation in fashion industry. 第二节 七选五（共 5 小题：每小题 2 分，共 10 分） 根据短文内容，从短文后的七个选项中选出给你填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 个选项为多余选项。 Money Matters Parents should help their children understand money. 61 So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example. 1. The basic function of money Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. Money lessons Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 63 If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.” 3. 64 Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product--- a name-brand butter and a generic (无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 65 If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. However, it’s not uncommon to meet some foreigners even in middle schools currently. There’s no denying the fact that schools hiring foreign teachers will be better known. In addition to that, it’s good for us students to develop interest in English study as well as to learn more about foreign culture. Meanwhile, our oral English will be improved a lot. On the other hand, some foreigners, though well paid, find it difficult to get accustomed to the way of life in a foreign country and they sometimes even worry about their safety. What we should pay special attention to is the truth that they lack familiarity with the students, as a result of which, a good many students can scarcely benefit from them. Personally, individual attitude and devotion to study are supposed to be the determinant factors on which we should count to advance our academic performance. normal
