Mr.Penbury manages to think of something which does stir up a bit of interest. He announces that Mr.wainwright is dead, which shocks everyone except Miss Wicks. He tells them he has phoned the police and proposes that theyconsider their alibis while waiting for the police to come.By directing a general rehearsal of their alibis,he tries to arouse everybody's attention and creates an atmosphere of tension and horror.

Most of the boarders tries hard to clear up a little ground by considering their alibis, though they are nervous, excited, anxious, impatient, and angry. The story comes to an end when they hear footsteps entering and Mr.Wainwright's cough, and readers at last understand that it is a made-up murder.
