In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about, It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich life-style of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. Keeping up with the Joneses’ came to mean keeping up with the rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. It seems that people never get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 61. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they_________. A. want others to know or to think that they are rich. B. want to be as rich as their neighbors. C. don’t want others to know they are rich. D. want to be happy. 62. It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to __________. A. live in apartments. B. have many neighbors. C. live outside New York City. D. live in New York City. 63. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ____________. A. a popular name in the United States. B. an important name. C. his neighbor’s name. D. not a good name. 64. According to the writer, it is_______ to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct. B. interesting. C. good D. impossible. B. Can people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene(基因) that determines skin color. The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 percent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 percent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.
Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebrafish to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment(色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin color is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanosomes(黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determine skin color. It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation(变异) in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes. Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays(紫外线) of the sun, which can cause skin cancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng. Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng. The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson. 65. What is the main idea of the passage? A. People can’t change their skin color without any pain. B. The new discovery helped find ways to change skin color safely. C. Pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he liked. D. Scientists have found out that people’s skin color is determined by the gene. 66. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. nowadays changing the skin color with the chemical treatment has bad effects. B. Europeans and Africans have the same genes C. the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancer D. there are two kinds of skin genes 67. Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra fish in order to ________. A. find the different genes of humans B. prove the humans’ skin color is determined by the pigment gene C. find out the reason why the Africans’ skin color is dark D. find out the ways of changing people’ s skin color 68. The reason why Europeans are light-skinned is probably that_____ A. They are born light- skinned people. B. Light-skinned Europeans have mutation in the gene for melanin production. C. They have fewer activities outside. D. They pay much attention to protecting their skin. C. If Confucius （孔子） were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy（哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he won’t soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 69. The opening paragraph is mainly used to ________ A. provide some key facts about Confucius B. attract the readers’ interest in the subject C. show great respect for the ancient thinker D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations 70. What is the best title for the passage? A. Forgotten Wisdom in America B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language C. Chinese Culture for Westerners D. Old Thinker with a Big Future 71. The passage is likely to appear in ___________. A. a biography(传记) B. a history paper C. a newspaper D. a philosophy textbook D. Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings. Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness. Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot lie trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately
the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness. 72. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our ______. A. self-respect B. financial rewards C. advertising ability D. friendly relationship 73. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is the same as_____. A. lying B. cheating C. stealing D. advertising 74. The underlined phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" （in Para.5）means______. A. offering advice to the clerk B. telling the truth to the clerk C. asking the clerk to be more attentive D. reminding the clerk of the charged item 75. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage. A. How to Live Truthfully B. Importance of Peacefulness C. Ways of Gaining Self-respect D. Happiness through Honorable Actions 第二节（共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） 根据短文内容，从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Public Speaking Training Get a coach 76 ，so get help.
