After three years behind the bars, she was released. Only a few years later, she was given a sentence far worse—she had an incurable and progressive disorder and would be totally blind. Meanwhile, Grace was also happily pregnant but terrified she would never see her child’s face. She believed she would succeed as a mother, although “success” had never been in her vocabulary before. She managed well despite fading vision. For years she kept consulting specialists about her eye problems, only to be told that her son would also be blind by the time he was a teenager. She swore to find something, anything, to prevent him from facing her fate. When conventional medicine offered no hope, Grace began a personal quest. She entered a local college. The office for disabled students had her reading assignments put on cassette tapes so that she could listen and learn. She began studying anatomy, physiology and other health sciences. Everyone knowing her was astonished at her persistence to educate herself, restore her vision and keep focused on raising a son who would have perfect eyesight. Eventually Grace’s own way worked and she earned the Ph. D. in Holistic Health for her successful work in improving serious eye disorder. Her eyesight slowly improved so much that she was able to qualify for a driving license. Even better, her son had perfect vision and was accepted into the Air Force. 21. From the passage we can know that Grace used to be _______. A. aggressive B. troublesome C. ignorant D. competitive

Who Can Recall His Past Lives, which sleepily brings out a land in which a dreamy
sense of the unknown is so obvious and superstition( 迷信 ) is not only a natural response, but a wise one. On the warm and rainy island of Phuket, I found the best way to access Thailand’s treasures was by motorbike. I rented one for four days for about 200 RMB and went on a tour guided mainly by fantasy. The Thailand I saw by motorbike was one where religion is ever-present. Though Buddhism is the country’s official religion, the footprints of other faiths can be found all over. Statues of the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesha aren’t uncommon in the country’s large number of Buddhist temples, and Muslim places of worship are splendidly equipped in communities in Thailand’s south. My motorbike allowed me to do more than just see and feel Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, it also allowed me to taste it. Tourism is a leading industry in Thailand, so in top destinations like Chiang Mai, Phuket and Bangkok, there are plenty of restaurants that appeal to international visitors with easy and familiar eats, especially around hotels and hostels. Finding something that tastes truly authentic, fresh prawns cooked in yellow curry and served with spicy beans, for example, is made much easier with a motorbike. More than anything, my motorbike allowed me to escape the shabby, crowded spaces Thailand is famous for. Deep in the mountains, with the sound of my 125cc engine melting off into the jungle, I found the Thailand I wanted, calm, fascinating and steaming with an ancient temptation.

Political aside, Doctor Who owes its long television life not only to a brilliant central character, terrifying alien foes and intelligent scriptwriting, but also to a distinctly British way of doing things. If the Earth is the Doctor’s favourite planet, it’s clear that Britain is his favourite country。
The global popularity of the modernized Sherlock Holmes series has proven yet again that no amount of big blockbuster all-guns-blazing cop shows can compete with the reserved and sharp detective work of one of Britain’s most well-loved characters. Benedict Cumberbatch has been rightly lauded for his depiction of the fast-thinking private eye, which has proven again we Brits are good at more than drinking tea。
Similar to the Pythons, the brilliance of Blackadder is set in its genius application of witty and classically British humor. From the dulcet tones of lead man Rowan Atkinson to the chumsy sidekick Tony Robinson, there’s no better show for telling what makes the British British and having a good laugh at it, including an entire season of pointing fun at the French, one of the most British activities.

Archaeologists made the discovery while moving a rock decorated with ancient cup and ring marks to a new location. When they turned the stone over, they found the same marks on the other side of the rock. It is one of only a few decorated stones of its kind. Susan Kruse first discovered the stone several years ago when out walking. The second set of cup and right marks were uncovered recently when archaeologists were moving the stone to a new site. Dating from the Neolithic or Bronze Age, the art was created between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. Archaeologists believe the markings may have been made for a number of reasons. Theses include for rituals(仪式) or mapping the stars. They could even be the “doodlings(涂鸦)” of bored, ancient shepherds. Ms Kruse said: “Finding cup and ring decoration on the opposite side has raised a number of questions. ‘Was the decoration meant to be viewed from both sides or was one decorated side deliberately placed face down? Or was the stone carved at different times?’” John Wombell, who is leading a project to record rock art, said it was an important discovery. He said, “Although some stones are decorated on different faces, I only know of a few other stones with decoration on opposite sides.” The archaeologist said most boulders with markings were too heavy to turn over to find out if they were decorated on the reverse side. The stone in the new discovery was moved by farmers about 200 years ago when they used it for building something. There is a group of rock art in the local area. Round houses dating to the Bronze
and Iron Ages have also been found. In addition, a farmer uncovered the jewellery while ploughing a field in the 1960s. 32. In what way was the prehistoric rock art found? A.
