Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap. On September 11th , 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, ―I promised you a gift, and here it is.‖ What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. 1 told it over and over how much I loved it! One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as ―hopeless‖, ―pitiful‖, and ―dying‖, which sounded ominous. Christmas was coming. ―Don’t expect any presents this year.‖ Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. ―If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.‖ As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. ―What? He's all right?‖ He hung up and shouted upstairs. ―The hospital said we can bring Richard home!‖ ―Thank God.‖ I heard Mum cry.

From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love! 61. What happened to the author on September 11th 1958? A. He got a baby brother. C. He became four years old. A. Impossible. A. Excitement. A.A sad Christmas day C. A special Christmas gift. B. Boring B. Happiness. B. He got a Christmas gift. D. He received a doll. C. Difficult C. Sadness. D. Fearful D. Disappointment.

62.What does the underlined word ―ominous‖ in Paragraph 3 probably mean? 63. Which word can best describe the feeling of the father when Christmas was coming? 64. What is the passage mainly about? B. Life with a lovely baby D. Memories of a happy family B Honey(蜂蜜)from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest(巢)and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals seeking(寻找)honey have a strange and unexpected helper 一 a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蜡) in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share. Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit. 65. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest? A. It’s small in size. C. It’s covered with wax. B. It’s hidden in trees. D. It’s hard to recognize.

66. What do the words ―the follower‖ in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. A bee. B. A bird. C. A honey seeker. D. A beekeeper.

67. The honey guide is special in the way____________. A. it gets its food C. it sings in the forest 68. What can be the best title for the text? A. Wild Bees C. Beekeeping in Africa B. Wax and Honey D. Honey-Lover's Helper B. it goes to church D. it reaches into bees’ nests

C Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may sometimes show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile. Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to ―read‖ people from another culture as we would ―read‖ someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly. It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressions because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of ―reading‖ the other person incorrectly. 69. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.? A. Love. B. Politeness. C. Joy. D. Thankfulness. 70. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that a smile can ______. A. show friendliness to strangers C. be used in the wrong places A. Learn about their relations with others. C. Find out about their past experience. 72. What would be the best title for the test? A. Cultural Differences B. Smiles and Relationship B. be used to hide true feelings D. show personal habits B. Understand their cultural backgrounds. D. Figure out what they will do next.

71. What should we do before attempting to ―read‖ people?

C. Facial Expressions

D. Habits and Emotions

D The Basics of Math—Made Clear Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond. The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect(方面)of arithmetic. They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically. Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the chance to ―make sense‖ of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study. By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery(神秘性) of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges. Professor H. Siegel, honored by Kentucky Educational Television as ―the best math teacher in America,‖ is a devoted teacher and has a gift for explaining mathematical concepts in ways that make them seem clear and obvious. From the basic concrete ideas to the more abstract problems, he is master in making math lectures learner-friendlier and less scary. With a PhD in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, Dr. Siegel teaches mathematics at Central Arizona College. His courses include various make-up classes and a number of lectures for future primary school teachers.
