A All over the world people enjoy sports, Sports help to keep

people healthy and happy, and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when "their" player or team wins. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for(参加) them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada. Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports. People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game together they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person?s character. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace(胜不骄,败不馁). 21. Why do some people get excited when they watch a game? Because _______. A. they win the game B. they get the good news C. their favourite team wins D. they can?t help themselves 22. Which of the sports has a long history? A. Water-skiing. B. Basketball. C. Volleyball. D. Long jump. 23. Why do people from different countries often become friends after a game together? Because____________. A. they train their character in the game B. they are friendly to each other C. they understand each other D. they help each other B Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers

are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power. Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” (机械化雇工) that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long. 7. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _______. A. how much money they can earn from their products B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop C. how much livestock to raise D. when to sell their products 8. Which of the following statements is true? A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers. B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today?s farms. C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present. D. Students at agricultural colleges can do nothing without the help of computers on today?s farms. 9. According to the engineers, _______will be done by robots in the near future. A. most of the farm work B. milking cows

C. all farm work

D. some farm work

10. What is the best title for the whole passage? A. Computer, Farmers? Best Friend C. The Agricultural Revolution B. Farmers in The Future D. Computers and Robots

C Getting around in Canada is fairly easy. Most cities have urban transportation systems, including buses, streetcars, and trains, and some of the larger cities also have subways. You can board these systems at regular stops along their routes. Some let you pay with cash while others require tickets. If you don?t have a ticket for the bus, you must pay with the correct amount of money. This is because the driver does not carry any change. If you plan to stay in a city for a long time, you may want to buy a monthly pass or a package of tickets to save money. You can buy subway tickets at any subway station. If you have to take several buses or subways for a single trip, you do not need to pay money each time. Simply ask the driver for a transfer (换乘) ticket, or take one from the machines on the subway platform. If you are not sure where to board the bus or the streetcar, just ask someone or follow the crowd. People can usually only board at the front of the bus where you show your pass to the driver. When using public transportation, Canadians line up. First come, first serve, is a common approach to many activities in Canada, and it is considered to be extremely rude to cut in any line. Maps of routes and schedules are usually available from the public transit (运输) company in your area, and there is also a telephone information line. You may ask someone for the name of the transit company in your area, and then look it up in the telephone book. 53. What is this passage mainly about? A. How to use public transportation in Canada. B. How to save money when traveling. C. Where to find subways in larger cities. D. How public transit companies work. 54. If you pay the bus fare in cash, _____. A. you may be given some change B. you can exchange money with the driver C. it might cost you a little more D. you must have the exact amount of money 55. By buying a monthly pass or a package of tickets, you can ______. A. take a bus whenever you want B. go wherever you like C. save money D. find comfortable seats 56. If you have to change subway lines on a single trip, _____. A. you have to pay each time B. you should buy another ticket from the machine C. you must ask for the driver?s permission D. you just need to pay once

D Florence Nightingale was born on May 12th, 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was born to a wealthy and well-educated English family. When she was young she became interested in caring for the sick and wanted to work in nursing, but her parents would not allow her to be a nurse. They expected her to get married and live a traditional woman?s life. However, Nightingale had made up her mind, so her parents had to give in. She traveled throughout Europe during her early years and learned many languages including Greek, Latin, French and Italian. She also visited many of the hospitals in these cities and took many notes of the sanitary (卫生的) conditions in these hospitals. In 1849, she traveled to Europe to study the European hospital system. In 1854, she worked as a manager at the Hospital for In-valid Gentlewomen in London. The following year, the Crimean War (克里米亚战争) broke out. Florence led 38 nurses and traveled to Scutari to help the wounded soldiers. When they arrived there they found the hospital conditions were very poor. Many of the wounded did not have beds and were lying on the ground. Florence and her nurses managed to improve the conditions. Florence also cared about the social welfare of the soldiers and would visit them during the night after every-one else had gone to sleep. She was referred to as "The Lady with the Lamp". In 1860, she founded the Nightingale School for nurses at St Thomas?Hospital in London. Once the nurses were trained, they were sent to hospitals all over Britain where they introduced what they had learnt. Nightingale?s concerns for sanitation, military (军队的)health and hospital planning practices are still in existence today. She died on the 13th August 1910. 46. What are we told in the passage? A. Nightingale had the same name as the city of her birth. B. Nightingale?s parents supported her decisions all the time. C. Nightingale didn?t want to marry. D. Nightingale only visited the wounded at night. 47. At least how many languages did Nightingale know? A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5 48. What was the purpose of Nightingale?s trip to Europe in 1849? A. To learn many languages. B. To study the hospital system there. C. To examine the hospitals there. D. To manage the hospitals there. 49. What can we infer from the passage? A. Nightingale was the only woman who founded the school for nurses in history. B. It was the war that helped Nightingale achieve her goals. C. Nightingale?s ideas affected Britain greatly. D. Nightingale was 80 when she died.
