Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing (释放) chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not sure to what degree people’s memories are affected. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. "Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering." But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people’s memories and changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past. "All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist. 58. The passage is mainly about __________. A. a new medical invention B. a new research on the pill C. a way of wiping out painful memories D. an argument about the research on the pill 59. The drug tested on people can __________. A. cause the brain to fix memories B. stop people remembering bad experiences C. prevent body producing certain chemicals D. wipe out the emotional effects of memories 60. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with in the last paragraph ? A. some memories can ruin people's lives.

B. people want to get rid of bad memories. C. experiencing bad events makes us different from others. D. the pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories. 61. You may probably read the passage in __________. A. a guidebook C. a medical magazine C I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’ too. But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted that if we said we’d be gone an hour, then we should be gone one hour or less -- not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to live up to expectations. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would be satisfied with nothing less than ugly black marks. As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out. My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested or divorced. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults. I am now trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world. 62. What does the sentence "But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings." mean?______ A. The author's mother was only mean to her. B. The author's mother suffered her. C. The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her. D. The author wasn't alone because of suffering. 63. The author’s mother wanted her children to _________. A. do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens B. a textbook D. a science fiction

B. be top students in school and graduate with honors C. stop seeing her friends who pretended to be sick to skip classes D. bring home colored report cards like her friends did 64. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text? A. The author has a deep hatred for her mother. B. The author’s mother set timetables for her children whenever they went out. C. Some of the children weren’t able to go to college because of their mean mother. D. As a parent, the author is following her mother’s example. 65. It can be inferred from the passage that________. A. All the other kids at school studied better than the author. B. The author worked hard and usually got good grades in studies. C. Mother was punished for breaking the Labor Law. D. The author’s family lived a miserable life. 第 II 卷(非选择题) 第三部分:写作(共 4 节,满分 45 分) 第一节:单词拼写(共 5 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 5 分) 66.My parents are proud that I am very a_____________ and always get good grades at school. 67.Two people were a_____________ yesterday at a Paris airport for bringing animals into Europe from South America illegally. 68.The house just went up in f_____________. This package includes happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle varieties of situations. Love Love plays an important role in out life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could become cruel and ferocious. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with unconditional love and care, they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others feelings. Kids make a person responsible and mature and help us to understand life better. Happiness and Sorrow Materialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically because of death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away. Failure and Success Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on out shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing success on us is by being modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones. Hope and Despair Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same. We have only one choice keep moving on in life and be hopeful. Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow. However, the problem of environmental protection is far from being solved completely. Human beings are being bothered by air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution, which do great harm to people’s health and even cause death. Moreover, deforestation has resulted in the increase of global temperature and unpleasant change of climate. Worse still, the overuse of natural resources has affected ecological balance. Luckily, governments of many countries have done a lot to stop the environment from being further damaged. Stricter laws are put into effect. Also, large amounts of money have been spent repairing the damage. In my opinion, we still have a long way to go to solve this problem. Much more efforts should be made to help people realize its urgency. On the other hand, those destroying the environment intentionally shall be severely punished. In a word, it’s time we made the earth a better place to live in. 附听力录音原文: (Text 1) W: I’m all wet. And it’s so cold today. That’s too bad. M: But at least the wind stops blowing. W: Do you think it might snow? M: I hope so! That would be fun. (Text 2) 77. making 第三节:任务型阅读(10 分) 82. better

W: Did you meet the new teacher yesterday? M: I’ve been sick for three days. (Text 3) W: Boy, this road is narrow. Be careful! We don’t want to spend the week in the hospital. M: So when do you think we’ll get to North Mountain? W: Not before midnight. M: Then let’s stay in a hotel tonight. (Text 4) W: That looks really good. How do you make it? M: I can’t tell you. It’s a family secret. Now please help me take it to the table. W: OK. I’m sure everybody in the party will enjoy tasting it. (Text 5) M: Polly’s going to see Dance Forever; it’s the show with lots of dancers. W: Do you want to see it? M: I prefer something different, like this Magic Show advertised here. The last time we went to the theatre we saw King of the Jungle and that had a lot of dancing too. W: So let’s see something without dancing in it. (Text 6) M: Metro Bus Company. W: Hello. I need to go to the airport from Main Street. M: Main Street and what? W: Main and Grant. M: OK. What time do you have to be at the airport? W: At 6 o’clock. M: Take Bus 3 at 4:50 at the corner of Main and Grant. Get off at Airport Boulevard. That’s two blocks from the airport. W: Thank you very much. (Text7) M: So, here is the living room. Please don’t touch the walls; we’ve just painted them. They used to be blue. Now, I hope you like green. As you can see, there’s lots of light in here. And there’s the fireplace. It’s great in the winter. W: Whew, it’s warm in here, isn’t it? Is there any air conditioning? M: No, just keep this window open. Now come this way. Here is your kitchen, all electric, and there’s room for a table here. W: That’s nice. Could I see the bedroom? M: It’s over here. We just put in a new carpet. W: Oh, really? That’s pretty good. (Text 8) M: Listen, a friend of mine is coming to town next week. I think you might like him. W: Really? Tell me about him anyway/

M: Well, he is very good-looking. W: Oh, yeah? Tell me more. M: He’s got brown hair and green eyes and a wonderful smile. But he is not very tall. He had a beard the last time I saw him. He has his own business. And he loves to travel. W: That’s nice. About how old is he? M: He’s almost thirty. W: Does he like dancing or music? M: He loves jazz, and he’s played the piano for years. I think he likes dancing too. W: Wow, he sounds great! Maybe he could come to a football game next weekend. M: Oh, they don’t pay American football in Italy. They play soccer. (Text 9) W: In today’s program we have the famous actor, Peter Jameson, who is known above all for his classical roles on stage, particularly in Shakespeare plays. Peter, was it your choice to appear so often in this type of play? M: Well, that’s an interesting question. Actually, I’ve always seen myself as an actor, a professional actor doing whatever comes along, rather than classical roles, Shakespeare and so on, although of course I do find those wonderful. W: I remember seeing you playing many big parts. You must have had lots of words to remember. How can you manage that? M: It was a gift originally. I’ve always had a sort of photographic memory, right from my earliest childhood. My subject at university was history actually, for which a memory is basic. W: Some of your theatre performances have been recorded and shown on TV. Have you ever watched them? M: I’ve always avoided watching myself anyway. Though I’m satisfied with my performance on stage, I still feel foolish to see myself on TV. It makes me feel strange and ashamed. W: OK, thank you very much, Peter. (Text 10) M: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s show, I’ll talk about Stephen and Jenny’s Corryvale Farm and their business. Corryvale Farm is in the west of England. Stephen and Jenny keep cows and chickens and sell milk and eggs. But most of their money comes from Jenny’s sheep. She has 50 sheep and each one has enough wool for four sweaters. Every six months, Stephen cuts this wool off the sheep so they won’t get too warm. One year ago, Jenny made some sweaters with the wool and tried to sell them at country markets. But it was summer and the weather was hot so people didn’t want to buy sweaters. She then made some socks. Everybody loved them because they were strong, not expensive, and easy to wash. That’s how Jenny’s business started. At first she made the socks at home, but soon she had thousands of customers so she had to send the wool to a factory, where all the socks are now made on machines. There are six colors, five sizes for all ages, and different socks for walkers, sportsmen and skiers. Jenny is busiest at Christmas because Corryvale socks are a favorite present. On the walls of Jenny’s office, there are lots of letters from happy customers all over the world.
