Robinson Crusoe

eRobinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is an inspiring novel of adventure. Defoe's novel describes the adventurous story of an English sailor, Robinson Crusoe, marooned for twenty-eight years on a deserted Caribbean island surviving by his courage. He manages to get food, clothing, tools, guns and gunpowder and so on. In order to survive, he learns to plant, to sew, and to cook and does things he has never done before. Robinson Crusoe also saves a savage, Friday, and makes him his servant. With the help of Friday and other persons he saved, Robinson Crusoe manages to leave the island and return to his hometown. Through Defoe’s description of Robinson’s life on the isolated island, we can know many merits in Robinson’s character: brave, hard working, especially the character of the rising Bourgeois Class revealed by him notably known as the pioneering and exploring spirits and the practical spirit. Robinson was portrayed in this social context. Robinson is full of enterprising and adventurous spirits. In fact like his father, Robinson could happily live a relatively comfortable life of the middle Class without spending much labor and taking any risks, just as his father said: “ a life not exposed to the Miseries and Hardships, the Labor and the Sufferings of the mechanic part of Mankind, and not embarrassed with Pride, Luxury, Ambition and Envy of the upper part of Mankind. And I might judge of the happiness of life by this one thing.” However, unlike his father, Robinson was unwilling to live in the middle Class and looking forward to going abroad looking for adventures so that he could open a new world and start his own enterprise. Robinson secretly left his family and adventured on the sea to realize his dream. Robinson bought a ship with his partners to explore new places but they faced a storm on the way and all the crew on the ship died in the storm except him. Robinson was marooned to an isolated island, but he soon overcome his negative mood. During his 28 years on the island, he overcome all the difficulties and developed a strong mind. Even though the tools were simple and he was inexperienced, Robinson never got discouraged, and never gave up before success. The adventurous spirit is also a very important factor in his survival. On the island, he is constantly facing the unknown and the unexpected, because it is a totally different place. He regrets how he rejects his father's wishes for him, "He pressed me earnestly, and in the most affectionate manner, not to play the young Man, not to precipitate my self into Miseries which Nature and the Station of Life I was born in, seemed to have provided against; that I was under no Necessity of seeking my Bread; that he would do well for me, and endeavor to enter me fairly into the Station of Life which he had been just recommending to me". He is aware that his survival during the storm from the wrecked ship is lucky enough and he has nothing to complain. Later during his general exploration of the island, he walks freely on the island. But the raining season was coming and he does not hesitate to go out looking for food. "I resolved, if possible, to get one of those savages into my hands, cost what I would". Later when he saved Friday and other savages, he knows how to manage them and becomes the master. Although he is frightened at the first sight of the mysterious footprint, he gets everything ready for the possible attacks from the savages. Then he tries to save Friday from being killed by other savages by shooting them and successfully saves Friday and makes him his servant. Later Robinson Crusoe explores the new areas on the island. Finally, he hates the killings between savages so much. He takes the initiative to stop the fight. His courage and energetic aggressiveness results in his actions and victory. The challenge for Robinson Crusoe is to help the captain of a ship to subdue the sailors who betray him and want to kill him on the island. It requires not only powerful arms, but also the courage and bravery. The enemies are from the civilized society equipped with powerful arms. Robinson Crusoe encourages the captain by saying, "Men in our Circumstances were past the Operation of Fear: That seeing

almost every Condition that could be, was better than that which we were supposed to be in, we ought to expect that the Consequence, whether Death or Life, would be sure to be a Deliverance". Finally they manage it. It is his rescue of the captain that enables Robinson Crusoe to leave the island. Robinson also has the hardworking spirits of this newly rising Class. Robinson Crusoe develops this very quality to overcome difficulty when living on the island. In order to secure the safety of his house and keep him from the threats from the outside, Robinson Crusoe has to build some fences around his house by hands without any assistance of tools. Robinson Crusoe's hard working can be shown in the following statements: "I had never handled a tool in my life, and yet in time, by labor, application, and contrivance, I found at last that I wanted nothing but I could have made it, especially if I had had tools; however, I made abundance of things even without tools, and some with no more tools than an adze and a hatchet, which perhaps were never made that way before, and that with infinite labor". Few men can overwork like Robinson. Nothing can stop him from working on it until it is done. Hard work it is indeed, "I should never be perfectly secure till this Wall was finished; and it is scarce credible what inexpressible Labor every Thing was done with, especially the bringing Piles out of the Woods, and driving them into the Ground, for I made them much bigger than I need to have done". He spends 28 years making the island his home. He grows corn and wild fruits. These eventually also provide necessary provisions for his long-distance sailing and make it possible for him to defeat the enemies and leave for England successfully. In fact in the description of Robinson Crusoe's adventures, his preparation for the escape is constantly shown. "The escape is easy, if one carefully prepares for it". As for me, from Robinson Crusoe's confidence in himself and his success on the island, we can also get these understandings. Nothig is impossible.I should have confidence to do everything. No matter whatever things that may happen to us,we should have a firm mind that w e can finish it in the end. And though we will suffer some pain outside or inside, when we achiev e the goal eventually, we will get the happiness undiscribed. The happiness need us to experienc e by ourself rather than hearing from other's .Only when we believe ourselves,we can do thi

ngs that look like unpossible. And this is the secret of confidence.
