But when a teenage boy approached him with a knife, Diaz knew the evening was about to take a more dramatic turn. The young man demanded Diaz’s wallet, and Diaz passed it over without objection. But just as the boy turned to walk away, Diaz called, “Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something.” The young man turned around, surprised. “If you’re going to rob people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep warm.” The teenager looked at Diaz in disbelief, and asked why he would do such a thing. Diaz replied, “If you’re willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, I guess you must really need the money.” He said he was heading out for dinner, and that he would be happy to take someone with him. The young man decided to take Diaz up on his offer. As they were sitting at the table, the manager, dishwashers and waiters all stopped over to say hello to Diaz, and the young man was amazed at his popularity. “Haven’t you been taught that you should be nice to everybody?” Diaz asked him. “Yeah, but I didn’t think people actually behaved that way,” the teenager replied. Thanks to Diaz, he was beginning to see that kindness wasn’t so strange after all. When the bill came, Diaz told the teenager that he’d have to get the check. After all, he still had Diaz’s wallet. But the teenager put the wallet on the table without a moment’s thought, and Diaz treated him to dinner. Diaz also gave the would-be robber a $20 bill — in exchange for his knife. “I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right,” Diaz said. 21. D. he had been given a $20 bill to take with him B Archery (箭术) is one of the oldest sports that are still being practiced today. The bow and arrow dates as far back as the Old Stone Age, and is the most widely used weapon in human history. While there is recorded evidence of arc hery competitions taking place in China more than 3,000 years ago, the modern sport of archery most likely originated in England during the 14th century. Then the sport began to develop fast and there were a few different styles of shooting, some of which developed into what we see today in the sport of archery. There was clout shooting, in which arrows were held high into the air with the purpose of hitting a target which was laid flat, not vertical. The aim was to land the arrow as close to the target as possible. This variety of shooting is still practiced today, often with traditional bows. “Roving marks”, another style, saw players shooting at a target, only to shoot at a new target from the location of the previous target. It is said that this is the oldest form of competitive archery, and was practiced by Henry VIII. Finally, there was butt ( 靶垛) shooting, in which butts held targets, which the players would shoot at. This is the ancestor of modern-day Olympic target shooting. Archery was a part of the second Olympic Games, which was held in 1900. It was dropped after 1920, however, because rules varied too much between nations. Archery was brought back into the Olympics in 1972. This was after enough nations had formed archery governing bodies affiliated with the Fédération Internationale de Tir l’Arc, which was founded in Paris in 1931, to standardize rules for international competitions. From its early history to modern times, archery has always been a competitive sport. Surely, many years from now archery will continue to be a popular sport reaching across age gaps and national borders, uniting archery lovers from all over the world. 25. According to the text, archery _______. A. was already very common in the Old Stone Age B. could be seen around Europe in the 14th century C. was recorded as a sport in China over 3,000 years ago D. disappeared from the Olympics after 1920 because of war 26. The underlined word “vertical” in Paragraph 3 can best be replaced by “_______”. A. straight B. smooth C. upstanding D. approaching 27. What can we learn about clout shooting? A. It can not be seen nowadays any more. B. It is the oldest form of competitive archery. C. Arrows have to land on the centre of a target. D. Players should shoot at a target that lies down. 28. What would be the best title for the text? A. A brief history of competitive archery. B. Archery at the Olympic Games. C. Different styles of archery. D. How to do competitive archery.

It is mot commonly seen

in school situations, like standing-up projects and class speeches. It has numerous forms: heart beating fast, trembling hands and legs, sweaty hands, dry mouth, etc. In fact, most of the fear occurs before you step on stage. Once you’re up there, it usually goes away. Thus, it is a phenomenon that you must learn to control. Try to think of a stage in a positive way. It heightens your energy and adds colors to your cheeks. With these good effects you will actually look healthier and more physically attractive. Many of the top performers in the world get stage fright too, so you are in good company. Stage fright may come and go or decrease, but it usually does not disappear permanently. You must concentrate on getting the feeling out and present what you have prepared calmly. Remember: nobody ever died from stage fright. But, according to surveys, many people would rather die than give a speech. If that applies to you, and you are an unlucky guy who is with stage fright the whole time, try out some of the strategies as follows to help get yourself under control. Realize that you may never overcome stage fright, but you can learn to control it, and use it to your advantage. Strategies are as follows when the program begins. 1) If legs are tiresome, lean on the table or shift legs or move. 2) Don’t hold notes. The audience can see them shake. Use three-by-five cards instead. 3) Use eye contact. Look at the friendliest faces in the audience. Remember: nervousness doesn’t show one tenth as much as it feels. Before each presentation, make a short list of the items that you think will make you feel better. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations. You never know which ones will work best until you try. Use these steps to control stage fright so it doesn’t control you. Once you are used to stage fright, you will find you on a road to a great speech-maker. 32. Someone may be most likely to suffer from stage fright when he/she is ________. A. attending an English class B. talking in front of people C. watching a performance D. standing in a classroom 33. By thinking of stage fright in a positive way, one could ________. A. get rid of stage frigh C. calm down before stepping on stage D. become more physically attractive D. learn to control stage fright 34. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the above passage? A. Stage fright only stays with a person for a short time. B. Top performers suffer from stage fright, too. C. Somebody can overcome or control stage fright. D. Some people prefer to do anything rather than make a speech 35. The passage mainly talks about ________. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago. 36 The scientists say that human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. 37 They are called “disease of civilization”. Many cancers and diseases of blood system are examples of such diseases. The scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. 38 However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that today. Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made little use of grains. 39 We eat six times more than our ancestors and we eat more sugar as well. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C. 40 But the scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fat, salty and sweet food. A. In that case, they would live a much healthier life. B. Modern people used to suffer from “diseases of civilization”. C. Stone Age people lived a simple life without any meat. D.
