According to the Inner Mongolia Post, the tragedy(悲剧) occurred on the afternoon of December 14,2002 when three school students skating on a frozen lake Qingcheng Park in Hohhot fell through the ice into the freezing water. More than 20 university students who happened to be near the spot immediately went to the rescue of the children. Two children were quickly rescued, but the third died. The child’s body was not found for three hours. Two of the rescuers, Liu Ye and Hao Longbiao, also died of cold and exhaustion(筋疲力尽). The body of Hao who took the lead in jumping into the lake was not found until the next day. A student who was unwilling to tell his name said he and his classmates from the
local college were taking photos at the lake. When they heard the children’s cries for help, they went to the ice hole hand in hand to rescue the children. But the ice kept breaking, causing most of them to fall into the icy water. B 40 years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of. But when the yearly games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, the situation began to change. Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London, His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled. In the first games just two teams of injured soldiers took part .The next year, 1949, five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year. In 1990 the first Olympics for the disabled were held in Rome, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games. Now, every four years the Olympic Games for the disabled are held, if possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games, although they are organized separately. In other years games for the disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville, In the 1984 Wheelchair Olympic Games, 1,064 wheelchair athletes form about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with the other Olympics. The games have been a great success in helping the progress of international friendship and understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you can’t enjoy sport. One small source of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games, however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee to include disabled events at the Olympic
Games for the able-bodied. Perhaps a few more years are still needed to persuade those fortunate enough not to be disabled that their disabled fellow athletes should be included. 25. The first games for the disabled were held ___ after Sir Ludwig Guttmann arrived in England. A．40 years B．9 years C．10 years D． 21 years 26. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the games for the disabled were once held in_____. A．New York B．London C． Los Angeles D．Rome 27. What do we know about Sir Ludwig Guttmann from the passage? A．He is welcomed by the British government B．He is an early organizer of the games for the able-bodied C．He is an injured soldier. D．He is from England. 28. From the passage, we may know that the writer is_____. A．a disabled person who once took part in the games B．against holding the games for the disabled C．in favor of holding the games for the disabled D．one of the organizers of the games for the disabled C For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern. Lynette Long was once the headmistress of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys fastened. I was constantly telling them to put them inside their shirts. There were so many keys. It never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned they were house keys. She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the impact(影响) working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being scared. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety. The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall, under a bed, or in a closet. The second is TV. They’ll often play it at high volume. It’s hard to get statistics(统计资料) on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone. 29. A feature(特征) shared by all “latchkey” children is that they A. take keys to school around their necks B. are also found in middle-class neighborhoods C. suffer problems from being left alone D. watch too much television during the day .
30. The main feeling these children have when they are at home by themselves is A. tiredness B. freedom . C. loneliness D. fear 31. We may draw a conclusion that
A. latchkey children often watch TV with their parents B. it’s difficult to find out how many latchkey children there are C. latchkey children try to hide their feelings D. latchkey children enjoy having such a large amount of time alone

Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. _ 36 First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. _37_ The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station. Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (受阻)by limited understanding. __38__ Here is some of the advice I give my students: ●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything. ●Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times. ● Do not translate everything into your native language. ● _39_ Don't concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas. ● Listen to something you enjoy. I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn't understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 40 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn't pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said. A. But you can't follow a native English speaker at all! B. What should you do? C. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners! D. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany. E. Maybe the following advice can help you. First of all, believe in yourself. Your greatest problem is that you lack self-confidence. The first thing you must do is to smile at your classmates. One smile speaks louder about your wish to make friends than any words. Your smile will show that you are friendly to them. Next, try talking with a student who is as shy as yourself or who shares the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate, and you can also talk about your hobbies as well. If anyone is in trouble in life or study, you should be ready to help him or her. Once you have confidence, you can make as many friends as possible. Yours, Li Hua
