III. 阅读理解(共两节;满分 40 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分 ) A One day when I was 5, my mother scolded me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door with my foot, I had kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys. Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. They never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defense against unwanted insects. For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly remind me of my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily. 36. When the author damaged the door, his parents __________. A. scolded him for what he had done C. told him how expensive it was B. gave him a spanking D. left the door unrepaired

37. How did the author feel every time he saw the damaged door? A. He felt it destroyed the happy atmosphere at his home. B. He found that his family members no longer liked him. C. He felt ashamed of his uncontrolled anger at that time. D. He felt he had to work hard to make up for the damage. 38. The experience may cause the author ___________. A. to have a better control of himself C. to hide his anger away from others 39. What is the main idea of this text? A. Adults should ignore their children’s bad behavior. B. Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people. C. What is the best way to become a more patient person. D. Parents are the best teachers of their children. B. not to go against his parents’ will D. not to make mistakes in the future

C Breathe, wave and smile. Along with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers. The huge stadium shook with all the whistling and clapping. It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the moment. Each deserved it. The seniors had been preparing for four years for this once-in-a-lifetime moment—the graduation ceremony. Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening speech. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in maroon(紫褐色)cap and gown. Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthem followed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance (效忠誓言). Students who had done well academically gave farewell speeches. The tears in some eyes convinced me that many had deep feelings about the occasion. It was as the class motto says,“Life brings us tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry; the smiles fade; but the memories last forever.” Then came the most important part of the ceremony. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest. To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. A girl sitting next to me even started yawning. But it wasn’t boring for those receiving the diploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives. A new page in the book of that person’s life had turned. They were glimpsing (开始领悟) their futures: Futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage. 43. What’s the article mainly about? A. An American graduation ceremony. B. The opening ceremony of a sports meeting. C. A presentation of college diplomas. D. A US college’s farewell party. 44. We know from the text that the author __________. A. felt lost about the future B. received her diploma on May 10 C. was actually a student from a foreign school D. felt upset at the presentation ceremony 45. The right order of the following events is __________. a. Diplomas were presented to graduates. b. Students gave farewell speeches. c. The US national anthem was played. d. The principal gave a short, warm speech. e. Seniors went into the stadium. A. d,c,a,b,e B. e,d,b,c,a C. d,b,e,a,c D. e,d,c,b,a 46. From the text, we can infer that __________. A. foreign exchange students could get the diploma B. the ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in life C. a diploma means a bright future for a graduate D. everyone felt excited at the presentation of the diploma D

Using tablet computers like Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Note just before bed can lead to a poor night’s sleep, according to research. More and more people are taking their tablets to bed with them to surf the web, check Facebook or email before switching off the light. But researchers are warning that the blueish light their screens give off can stop users getting a good night’s sleep. That is because this type of light is like daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light suppresses production of a brain chemical called melatonin (褪黑激素), which helps us fall asleep. This is because our brains have evolved to be wakeful during daylight hours. By contrast, light which is more orange or red in tone does not reduce melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a hint that the day is ending. Neurologists (神经病学家) have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can disturb sleep. Researchers are warning that looking at tablet displays for more than two hours“leads to a suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices give off optical radiation (光辐射) at short wavelengths”— in other words, they give off bluer light. They say:“Although turning off devices at night is the ultimate solution, it is recommended that if these devices are used at night, displays are dimmed as much as possible and that the time spent on them before bed should be limited.” They drew their conclusions after measuring melatonin levels in 13 volunteers, after they had spent time viewing iPads at full brightness at a distance of 10 inches, for two hours. Melatonin levels were significantly lower after they had done this, than they were after the volunteers had viewed their iPads for the same time, but while wearing orange glass goggles(护目镜), which cut out the blue light. It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be damaged by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that continuous disturbance to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity, and even breast cancer. 47. What stops users from getting a good night’s sleep? A. Blueish light. A. increases B. Screens. B. removes C. Melatonin. C. reduces D. Orange or red light. D. handles 48. The underlined word “suppresses” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________. 49. We can infer from the passage that _________. A. orange and red light does harm to a good night’s sleep B. too much late night screen time leads to more than sleep problem C. the less melatonin our body produces, the more easily we fall asleep D. our brains recognize orange or red light in tone as a hint that the day is ending 50. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ________. A. complain about problems caused by using iPads before bed B. inform readers of a recent research C. offer some suggestions on late night screen viewing D. support late night screen viewing 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
