The discovery was made by researchers at York and Harvard universities when they were examining the genetic relationship between the ancient woolly mammoths and mastodon to modern elephants—the Asian elephant, African forest elephant, and African savanna elephant. Once they obtained DNA sequences( 序 列 )from two fossils( 化 石 ) , mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths. The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years. The divergence of the two species took place around the time of the divergence of Asian elephants and woolly mammoths. This result amazed all the scientists. There has long been debate in the scientific community that the two might be separate species, but this is the most convincing scientific evidence so far that they are indeed different species. Previously, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African forest elephants were two populations of the same species, despite the elephants' significant size

differences. The savanna elephant has an average shoulder height of 3.5metres while the forest elephant has an average shoulder height of 2.5metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tons, roughly double the weight of the forest elephant. But the fact that they look so different does not necessarily mean they are different species. However, the proof lay in the analysis of the DNA. Alfred Roca, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, said, “We now have to treat the forest and savanna elephants as two different units for conservation purposes. Since 1950, all African elephants have been conserved as one species. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority (优先)for conservation purposes.” 16.One of the fossils studied by the researchers is that of ________. A.the Asian elephant B.the forest elephant C.the savanna elephant D.the mastodon elephant 17.The underlined word “divergence” in Paragraph 4 means “________”. A.evolution B.exhibition C.separation D.examination 18.The researchers' conclusion was based on a study of the African elephant's ________. A.DNA B.height C.weight D.population 19.What are Alfred Roca's words mainly about? A.The conservation of African elephants. B.The purpose of studying African elephants. C.The way to divide African elephants into two units. D.The reason for the distinction of African elephants. 20.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Naturalists' Beliefs about Elephants B.Amazing Experiments about Elephants C.An Unexpected Finding about Elephants D.A Long Scientific Debate about Elephants Ⅲ. [1] Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask. [2] Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties. [3] Volunteers usually help in many different ways. They may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs. Work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.

[4] Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody ____________ can become a volunteer. [5] The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. pay special attention to 中的 to 是介词, 后面的句子作 to 的宾语, 在宾语从句中缺主语, 故选 what。 2. (be)in danger“(处于)危险中”。 the names and addresses of his friends in the possession of “被??拥有”;in the charge of “由??负责”; at the mercy of “受/听任??摆布”;at the risk of “冒?? How many is the population of China?应说 What's the population of China? be applied to+n. A 联系空后 “so we must take measures to protect them”我们知道, 很多野生动物将要灭绝。 本题为一个含有比较状语从句的复合句,第三个 as 引导的是 比较状语从句,其完整结构为“as all other animals on the earth are endangered”,endangered 承 前省略了,由于主语“all other animals on the earth”比较长,故采用了倒装结构,将谓语动词 are 提前,以避免头重脚轻。 Ⅱ. 根据第三段 Once they obtained DNA sequences(序列)from two fossils(化石),mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years

根据第三段 Once they obtained DNA sequences(序列)from two fossils(化石),mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths 可判断研究者的结论是建立在对非洲大象的 DNA 的研究结果的基础上的,故选 A 项。 19. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority (优先)for conservation purpose. 21.Volunteer Service in the West 纵 观 全 文 以 及 由 主 题 句 即 第 二 段 第 一 句 “Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services.” 22.Meeting new people and mix with different people. 从第五段第二句“Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks life.” 23.who is willing / likes to serve people in need 24.I like to help out in local libraries, because I like books very much. I'll arrange them in good order so that readers can easily find what they want. 由画线词所在句“Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old ?”
