The twelve or so teenagers who live at the shelter attend parenting classes four days a week. The class is called Mommy and Me.Teacher Delores Clemens is a mother of five and a grandmother. She teaches basic skills, like how to give a baby a bath and how to dress a baby depending on the season. She remembers one student who learned from her mother not to pick up a crying baby. The mother said that would only make the child needy and overly demanding.Delores Clemens says, “that’s not true. You have to hold your baby! He is crying for a reason. If you never pick him up, he’s going to keep crying.Pick your baby up.Cuddle your baby.Hug him! And she started to do that. They just want a little cuddling and a little love. And it works!” Delores Clemens says her students also learn how to be good mothers by letting themselves be mothered.Around three hundred fifty teenage mothers graduate from Covenant House’s Mommy and Me class every year. In class, with her baby son is Natasha. She lived on the streets. She is glad not only for the warmth and shelter of Covenant House. As she told reporter Adam Phillips, she is also glad for the help they offer in seeking a more secure life.

B There is a man named Gregory Kloehn who digs through dustbins every day, but not for the reason that most people would think. He isn’t homeless. In fact he is trying to help the homeless. Gregory began his life as a sculptor. But he often felt that his sculptures, which just stood in rich people’s houses for years, lacked a meaningful purpose. So in 201l he decided to put his artistic energies into creating homes to sell—not ordinary homes but small structures built entirely from recycled materials.
4页

The thought of creating homes for the homeless didn’t occur to him until the year 2013, when a homeless couple asked him for a tarp(防水布).Instead of a tarp,Gregory offered them something better:a small home with a water tank, a kitchen and a trap for waste. They were so grateful that Gregory decided to focus his efforts on helping house the homeless population in his city. And soon his“Homeless Homes Project”was started. Before starting a new home , Gregory , goes hunting for materials by digging through dustbins.Everything he finds is usable—refrigerator doors become house doors;washing machine doors often serve as windows, and the tops of cars become strong roofs. He put wheels at the bottom for users to move their homes around easily. Each home takes two to three days to make. So far Gregory has donated dozens of homes to the city’s most needy. While his small low-cost mobile homes are not the final solution to the problem of homelessness, they are really practical and do provide a warm and safe place for the homeless to stay in.They are simply a way for one man to do something nice for those in need of some help. Gregory has written a book titled Homeless Architecture, where he explains techniques to build those homes and he is now working on weekend workshops.“A lot of people who hear about what I’m doing want to get involved,” he said. “Maybe we can meet someplace and put a couple of homes together. ”

25. Why did Gregory turn from making sculptures to creating homes? A. He had no home to live in. B. He had to make more money. D. He wanted to help the homeless.

26. The author mentions the story in paragraph 3 to tell us____________. A. Gregory’s small homes were popular among the homeless B. how Gregory got the idea of “Homeless Homes Project” C. the homeless couple asked Gregory to produce more homes D. housing the homeless in a city was not an easy task 27. What can we conclude from Paragraph 4? A. Gregory has great trouble hunting for materials for his small houses. B. It takes Gregory a long time to produce a home. C. Gregory’s work requires imagination and creativity D. Everything in the dustbins will be used in Gregory’s work.
5页

28. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Gregory’s project will help more homeless people. B. Gregory doesn’t need to make small homes now. C. Gregory’s work will completely solve the homelessness problem. D. A single person can make no difference to social problems.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you know what a big dream is? 36 Or, is a big dream something that provides only

entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow. The Self Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego ( 自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to. 37 Most people are influenced by the inside voice.

That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true. 38 Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind. The World If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 39 In the past, big

dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at. The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 40

A. Family and Friends B. How Big Dreams Die C. Does a big dream show one’s future?

D. They simply fail until they succeed. E. Sometimes it is right, but more often it is wrong F. It is the last and the most terrible barrier. G. And their big dream is to be a rock star or a famous artist.

作文 One possible version: It is common that we use cell phones as a means of communication for its convenience. However, the fact that people are getting addicted to cell phones cannot be ignored. Have a look at the picture. Three out of four persons are playing with their cell phones when having dinner, immersing themselves in a personal space. The scene can be seen everywhere in our life. Some even have signs of anxiety if they don’t have their cellphones with them. I think there are two reasons for this. On one hand, people are eager to share ideas with others. On the other hand, not believing in others, they are unwilling to communicate with people around them face to face. Faced with this problem, I thought making a balance of our life is the key. We should spend more time with our family and friends, and at the same time try to be self-controlled to avoid over-independence on cells phones.
