Teaching self-control starts early and truly and never Stops. The thoughtful parent knows that each child is an individual with a will of its own. Respect for a child's need will be balanced with respect for the need of others. Teaching your child self-control involves helping him to: think before acting; control impulse, weigh consequences, make safe and acceptable choices. Knowing what to expect from your child at each stage of growth will provide guideposts as your child grows. Lessons in self-control need to be age-appropriate. Parents also need to agree on clear limits and boundaries as well as reasonable consequences at each stage of development. It is important to be a model of self-control for your child. Controlling the urge to yell when in a frustrating situation will show your child it can be done. Considering consequences by thinking aloud will give your child a living example of thinking before acting. Your everyday display of kindness, patience and thoughtful regard will go farther than anything else! Babies and toddlers experience frustration often as they do not have the means to communicate or acquire what they need and want. Distracting the very young children can work sometimes. As preschoolers get older, say age two or beyond, they may need to cool down. Placing them on a chair for a minute or two may stop out-of-control behavior. As soon as the child settles, he should be allowed to move from the time-out area. This can be an effective way of teaching early self-control. Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text. 1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ________ . A. one’s familiarity with the text B. one’s purpose in reading C. the length of a group of words D. lighting and tiredness 2. The author may believe that reading ______. A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted. B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve both the ability to see and to comprehend words. C. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve an efficient reading. D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve one’s ability to see words. 4. Which of the following is NOT true? A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time. B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training. C. World No Tobacco Day, Special Attention Goes to Women
1 The observance is meant to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in 1987. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls. The World Health Organization says tobacco kills nearly 5.5 million people a year -- another victim every six seconds. Tobacco use is a top cause of death worldwide. One billion people smoke. 2 The W.H.O. says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Women currently represent about 20% of smokers. But tobacco use among girls is increasing. Data collected from 151 countries show that about 7% of young girls now smoke. 3 In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal. Almost 170 countries have signed a treaty called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The W.H.O. is calling on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest extent possible and to do more to protect women. 4 This year marks the fifth anniversary since the treaty went into effect. 80% of the signers have banned the sale of tobacco products to young people. 70% have required health warnings on tobacco products. The W.H.O. estimates that tobacco use caused one hundred million deaths in the 20th century. If current rates continue, that number could reach one billion in this century. 5 Many of the events are aimed at persuading people, especially the young, not to start smoking. The World’s Water Supply
Understanding how much of our world’s water can be used and useable by humans helps us understand how important conservation() efforts really are. 1 Some even believe that if we really were in a water crisis we could just make more. After all, most of us have heard the often-used sentence, “Seventy percent of the world is made up of water. ” 2 As a “closed-system”, the world is all the time recycling and reusing its water. This means that the water you drink every day is the same water that was around when George Washington and even the Roman Empire were alive and successful. 3 These huge reservoirs(蓄水) are not drinkable for man because of their high salt content. You may think of a way called desalinizing(脱盐) which means taking the salt out of ocean water to make more fresh water. 4 On the other hand, desalination will use up resources without practical solutions. There are also serious environmental problems about how desalinizing the oceans will have an effect on the animals and plants that live there.

5 Of the three percent of the world’s water that is fresh, over half that can’t be used since it is mostly frozen in Greenland and Antarctica. According to geologists, “Only about 0.3 percent of freshwater is contained in rivers and lakes.” The rest is all underground. A. Water is the source of life. B. Some people think that water is in limitless supply. C. In fact the fresh water we can use on earth is limited. D. Though this is a possible choice, it is by far the most expensive. E.
