Some women’s great efforts and their names have been recorded in history. Here’s a look at some of the strong figures of women in World War Ⅱ. Tatiana Nikolaevna Baramzina was born in Glazov of Russia on December 12,1919.In 1943, she was sent to the Central Women’s Sniper Training School and upon her graduation in April, she was further sent to the front. She managed to kill around 16 enemies in the first three months! Unfortunately, she was captured(俘虏) by the enemies and was killed on the fifth of July in 1944.Today,the street where she grew up has been renamed in her memory. Anne Frank was a Germanborn Jewish girl who was wellknown for the publication of her diary that described(描述) all her experiences when the Germans occupied Holland in World War Ⅱ.Anne was born on June 12,1929 and she, along with her family, went into hiding in July 1942.Two years later, her family was captured and seven months after her arrest(被捕) ,Anne Frank died of illness in early March 1945. B You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But did you know there is such a thing as a ―banana person‖? How strange! Are these people from ―another earth‖? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me. ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a ―banana person‖. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside-thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside-looking like a Chinese.

Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas Chinese. These people may be citizens of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang. He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen. 5. ―ABC‖ in this text stands for ―_______‖. A. three English letters C. Chinese born in America B. a kind of banana D. Americans born in China

6. Chinese in Western countries are called ―banana persons‖ because __________. A. their bodies are white inside but yellow outside B. they think like Westerners but look like Chinese C. they were born in China but go to study in America D. they are Chinese who look like bananas 7. C. N. Yang is mentioned here to show that ________. A. American Chinese are great B. we love American Chinese C. Chinese people can win Nobel Prizes D. American Chinese are not Chinese citizens 8. This text is mainly about _________.

A. different kinds of bananas C. the Nobel Prize

B. overseas Chinese D. the life story of C. N. Yang

C Dear Sir, I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Two buses travel along their route: the number 49 and number 16. But by the time the number 16 bus reaches Souk Road it is always full, so I can’t get on it. I have to wait for the number 49, because sometimes there are empty seats on it. The timetable says that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day? The regulations (规章) say that if there are empty seats on a bus, the bus must stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why do the half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop? The regulations say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when it reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them. It is clear that our bus companies break the regulations and think little of their passengers. Can nothing be done to make your service better? Yours, 9. The writer has to take Bus No. 49 because______. A. it arrives on time C. it travels faster B. it is not always full D. it has fewer seats on it

Buy Nothing Day is November 29. It’s 25 days before Christmas. It’s after Thanksgiving and often the first day of Christmas shopping. At this time, we see ads in newspapers and on TV telling us to ―buy, buy, buy!‖ The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia.
