Cultural background

1. What is the key insight in The Odyssey, a long poem by the Greek author Homer?
The essentials of the journey are not only outward struggles against tremendous difficulties, but, more importantly, inward struggles leading to personal growth. His journey is the one of self-discovery and of combating his own arrogance and pride from his young rebellious heart. It makes sense to borrow The Odyssey from Greek mythology to describe the rebellious years young people usually go through.

Cultural background

3. What is special feature of Generation Z?
It is also known as the Net or the Internet Generation. In the US and other Western nations, it is a common name for the people born from the mid-1990s or early 2000s through to the present. This generation has spent their entire life with the World Wide Web and high-tech gadgets.

Critical thinking

Theme exploration

1. How can young people cope with this difficult time period – the odyssey years? Young people should use more time to communicate with family, friends, and other loved ones, spend less time on the Internet, games, and do physical exercise to improve the fitness level in case of some approaching difficulties. Otherwise, they should participate in meaningful activities to fill up all the days.

Critical thinking

Theme exploration

2. What might be the most significant personal effect that is caused by the delay in transition to adulthood? ? Delayed marriage and career ? More competition ? Loss of good opportunities ? More self-awareness ? Further exploration of career ? Establishment of stable financial status

Critical thinking

Theme exploration

3. How do you evaluate the radical social changes resulting from this newly added phase? ? Through a lot of changes, young people become more flexible than older people ? Social changes are so radical that it is hard for everyone to fit in the pattern ? Radical social changes will eventually shape society into a more modern one

Critical thinking

Culture exploration

How do you understand the following quotes “What I do is all for you”and “Put yourself far enough away to give your child much room but close enough to help him or her if asked”?

Chinese and western education differ widely in a first embodiment of family education. Chinese parents tend to educate their children in a directive, command type. They plan for all, make their area of control, and pay few attention to children’s independent ability.

Culture exploration

How do you understand the following quotes “What I do is all for you”and “Put yourself far enough away to give your child much room but close enough to help him or her if asked”?

However, the western family education is quite different, parents tend to put their children in equal status. This gives the child enough space. Parents pay attention to children's awareness and

abilities to stand on their own.

Critical thinking

Q1: How much do you know about this American
family sitcom “Growing Pains”? This ABC family sitcom revolved around the Seaver family, who lived on Long Island in New York. Dr Seaver, a psychologist and his wife Maggie Seaver, a journalist, try to do their best raising their family and although their kids, Mike, Ben, Carol and Crissie, cause them endless problems, they manage to keep the family close together. As long as they got each other, nothing else matters.

Q2: Taking into consideration of Odyssey years, what message can you get from this TV program? It is not regarded as a comedy over there but a life lesson and a sociology course. Nowadays, It's hard enough to raise kids of Odyssey years, but when you have to cope with the kids, things tend to get out of hand, because young people are wandering and going through life, exploring and discovering themselves. They fall in and out of love; they try one career and then try another.

Q2: Taking into consideration of Odyssey years, what message can you get from this TV program? Their parents grow increasingly anxious, for they see their grown children’s transition phase between student life and adult life stretching five years, seven and beyond; they see their children delaying marriage, having children and permanent employment. To solve all these problems, both the parents and children should reflect on themselves and communicate with each other.

Essay writing

Focus on a comparison / contrast essay
To compare means to show the similarities and to contrast means to show the differences. In everyday life, you compare and contrast when you buy a car or choose an apartment. You can also compare two teachers, two jobs, or two ways to spend a weekend. There are some important points to remember when you write a comparison / contrast essay:

Writing devices

Essay writing

? The items being compared or contrasted must be from the same category. In other words, they should

be comparable.
? It is better to mention the points you would like to compare or contrast in the thesis statement so as to let readers know about the main idea in

your essay right away.

Writing devices

Essay writing

? There are two basic patterns to organize the details of your essay: point-by-point and subject-bysubject. Here, point refers to the aspects you would like to use to develop your essay, and subject refers to the two items or people you want to compare or contrast. In this unit, you will learn how to use the point-bypoint pattern. For instance, if you compare two generations, you may organize the details as follows:

First of all, young people nowadays are more active in life (Detail 1). As we can often observe, many students who are still in high school have started to find jobs. They think this will help them gain more experience and they can work better after graduating from universities. This is an absolutely opposite view to their parents’ generation. In their times, parents often waited until they were qualified enough to get a job. They were not as active as young people

In addition, the young generation better adapts to the changes of life (Detail 2). For example, for the past decade or so, the Internet has developed tremendously. Young people find it extremely easy to use and feel very comfortable to apply it to their studies and work; therefore, they have made more progress at school and at work. In contrast, their parents usually find it hard to remember how to use computers or surf online. They often get frustrated when they have to work on a computer and find it hard to adapt to the new technology.
