Last summer, after finishing our work in China, I took a trip of a lifetime on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Leaving Beijing early on a Wednesday morning in July, my wife and I traveled through some gorgeous countryside before we arrived in Moscow the following Monday evening. The first part of the journey took us past the Great Wall and through the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. At the Mongolian Republic border, we had a delay(耽搁) while the wheels were changed because the railway is different.

On our way to the capital, Ulan Bator, we saw herdsmen( 牧人) on horseback looking after their cattle. There was a terrible thunderstorm as we crossed a vast open plain. Later we had a quick tour of Ulan Bator. Next, the train took us into Siberia. After a stop at Irkutsk, a popular holiday resort ( 胜地), where a tour group left the train, we passed the great Lake Baikal. Later, we saw some lovely wooden houses in pretty, sunny countryside. This surprised us, as we had imagined Siberia as being covered in thick snow. Over the next few days, we passed through Novosibirsk, Omsk and other cities in the heartlands of the Russian Federation. By now, our body clocks were losing their sense of time. We wanted to sleep and eat at the wrong time! At last we reached Moscow. We were too tired and slept for 16 hours that night. The next day we went sightseeing. We saw the Kremlin and some other great buildings in the Russian capital. Then, all too soon, it was time for us to return to our home in London. 21. How many days did it take the author to reach Moscow? A. five B. six C. seven D.eight

22. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. The train broke down at the Mongolian Republic border. B. The author travelled with a group of friends C. The author’s body clock ran faster than the others’. D. Ulan Bator is the capital of Mongolian Republic 23. The author was surprised by what he saw in Siberia because _____. A. it was covered with thick snow though it was sunny. B. the houses there were so pretty. C. it was not covered in snow but it was sunny. D. there were a large number of tourists there. 24. The passage mainly tells us _____. A. the trip from Beijing to Moscow B. how to travel to Moscow from Beijing. C. How wonderful the capital of Russia is. D. The trans-Siberian Railway.

C
What makes children happy is candy. And more candy is better, right? Well, it turns out that it might not actually be the case. A few years ago researchers did a study on Halloween night when some trick-or–treaters were given a candy bar, and others were given a candy bar and a piece of bubble gum(泡泡糖). Now, you would imagine that the kids who got a candy bar and a piece of bubble gum would be happier than the kids who got just a candy bar. George Wolford, a psychologist at Dartmouth College, and his fellow researchers found something quite different. ―Those children, who got both a full-sized candy bar and a bubble gum, were less delighted than those who got a candy bar only,‖ Wolford says. It actually depends on the order in which these things happen. In the study, the kids got a great treat first and then a less one afterward. In other words, they got a pleasant procedure first and then got something slightly less pleasant afterward. And it turns out that when they think about the experience, they don’t think about the experience as a whole ----they only judge by how the experience ends. So if we have a great experience that starts to go downhill, we will consider the whole experience as being less good. However, if something starts out terribly and then starts to get better towards the end, we will think the whole experience a little bit better. ―If you’re in a painful experience and it’s getting better, then there’s a sense in which things are improving,‖ he says. ―If you’re going from a nice treat to a lesser one, the case is going the wrong way.‖ So if you get a lesser treat first and a nicer one second, you’re likely to be very happy; but if you get a nice treat first and a lesser one second, you’re likely to be more dissatisfied with the whole experience. 29. The study on Halloween night is carried out to find_______. A. what makes children happier on Halloween B. how to get more candy on Halloween C. where to get more candy on Halloween D. if more candy makes children happier 30. According to the fourth paragraph, people have different feelings about gifts

mainly because of___. A. the value B. the place C. the order D. the time

31. What does the underlined phrase ―go downhill‖ in Paragraph5 refer to? A. Walk down the hill B. Get better and better. C. Become worse and worse. D. Start out terribly. 32. If Tom gets a piece of bubble gum first and then gets a candy bar, he will probably feel___. A. glad B. disappointed C. hurt D. sad

D
You wake up in the morning. The day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person at the other end has a depressing(令人沮丧的)tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood? Impossible! Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time. Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others’ pity or respect. When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首)of a negative person is put in you, you have the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down. Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a coworker, or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but what this does is to lower you to the same negative level and they won’t feel ashamed of themselves about that. Negativity(消极性)often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着)you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.

33. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________. A. make a comparison C. offer an evidence B. introduce a topic D. describe a daily scene

34. How can negative people have effect on us? A. By influencing our emotion. C. By changing our way of thinking. B. By telling us the nature of life. D. By comparing their attitude to life with ours.

35. Some negative people base their happiness on ________. A. other people’s pity for them attitude C. making other people unhappy them B. building up a positive

D. other people’s respect for

第二节(共 5 题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and where we’ve never been before. But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 36 . Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes. For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, ―Would I say this to the person’s face?‖ if the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37 . If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct ( 本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 38 .If it is caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room. 39 . Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 40 . At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions. A. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely. B. Everyone was new to the network once. C. It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online. D. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. E. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. F. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear. G. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
