It’s easier to go downhill than to climb uphill; so it is easier to fall into bad habits than into good ones. Bad habits do not come suddenly . They come little by little .School children first pick up little bad habits in schools and in the streets .When they can’t write their lessons, they copy from others .If they see bigger boys smoking ,they also want to learn to smoke. If they see their friends gambling , they want to copy their examples. When they get bigger, the habits become stronger and stronger so that they can no longer get rid of them. From copying, they learn to cheat , from gambling ,they learn to steal. So it is very important for us to get rid of bad habits in the beginning. 2.From copying, they learn to cheat , from gambling ,they learn to steal.

At 9:00 Dick Spivak’s bank telephoned and said his payment was late. “The check is in the post,” Dick answered quickly. At 11:45 Dick left for a 12:00 meeting across town. Arriving late, he explained that traffic had been bad. That evening, Dick’s girlfriend wore a new dress. He hated it. “It looks just great on you,” he said. Three lies in one day! Yet Dick Spivak is just an ordinary man. Each time, he told himself that sometimes the truth makes too many problems. Most of us tell much the same white lies, harmnless untruths that help to save trouble. How often do we tell white lies? It partly depends on our age, education, and even where we live. One US study shows that women are more truthful than men, and honesty increases as we get older.

While most people use little white lies to make life easier, most Americans care about honesty in both public and personal life. They say that people today are less honey than they were ten years ago. Although it is believed that things are getting gworse, agelying seems to be an age-old human problem. The French philosopher Vauvenarges, writing in the eighteenth century, touched the truth when he wrote “ All men are born truthful and die liars.” 注释

Long ago ,there lived in Greece a learned man. He was so well known for his good knowledge of almost everything that lots of people from all over the country came to learn from him. The great man taught his students whole-heartedly and answered their questions with great patience. One day a student asked him, “ My dear teacher, didn’t you say you yourself have many ,many more questions about things than we do? But I think we students have far more than you.” With a smile on his face, the teacher drew two circles ,one as large as a big cake, the other smaller. Then he said , “Of course, I have learned much more. But it’s wrong to think that a teacher has fewer questions than his students. Now, look at these two circles. The inside of the bigger one is my knowledge of things, and the inside of the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, I have to use the longer line to draw the bigger circle. That means I have more opportunities to face what is still unknown. And that’s why I myself have more questions than you do. The more you learn , the more questions you have. You will never learn enough ,you know.” 2.He was so well known for his good knowledge of almost everything that lots of people from all over the country came to learn from him. 3.The more you learn , the more questions you have.

Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School .Yet, education is very important and useful .Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. . It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula

in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists before us didn’t get everything from school .Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison did not even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school . They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. In 1965, a sailor from Sweden was on a ship. He wrote a letter, asking any young woman to him. He put the letter in a bottle and threw the bottle into the sea. Two years later, a man found the bottle on a beach in Italy. He read the letter and showed it to his daughter. She was 18. As a joke, she wrote to the sailor. They began to exchange letters. In a few months, they were married. Here is the second story. Back in 1924, a boy from Arkansas wrote his name on the back of his piture. He put the picture in a bottle and dropped the bottle into a river. The bottle was not found for many years until one day a man named Bill picked it up on a beach in Florida. [材料 4] Arabs consider it very bad manners to start talking business at once. Even the business government official always takes time to be polite and offer refreshments. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this. The conference visit is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Very often you will have to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into the room without being asked, talk or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave. Act as though you do not hear, and never show that you are not pleased at being interrupted. Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is a vagueness in doing business in the Middle East which will puzzle a newcomer. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions. When an Arab says yes, he may means “maybe”. When he says maybe, he probably means “no”. You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab because it is considered impolite. Instead of “no”, he will say “inshallah”, which means, “If God is willing”. On the other hand “yes” does not necessarily mean “yes”. A smile and a slow nod might seem like an agreement, but in fact, your host is polite. [材料 5] Talking About Food Isn’t it astonishing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten…?” “What did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most part of Asia, for example, no meat is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day. The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don’t like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish. So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits. In most part of Asia, for example, no meat is complete without rice. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it.

From the time we were babies we have been taught our manners. We are taught how to hold a spoon and chopsticks and not to talk with our mouths full of food. We are taught how to shake hands and when to stand and when to sit and the way to introduce people. Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating together means that you are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia, it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. They politely turn their backs on each other when they are talking food. Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing. They do it to show that they want a sick person to get well, or to pless a new born baby. In most other places, spitting means just something completely different. It’s something to do to show that you hate someone. When we go to visit someone, we say “hello” and “How are you?” and things like that. If you were visiting an East African village, everyone would be very careful not to pay any attention to you. The polite thing there would be for to go quietly, without speaking to anyone, and sit beside your friend. You would wait until he had finished what he was doing and then he would begin talking to you. In a village in Arab, a visitor walks behind all the tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passed in front, he would be invited into each tent and asked to eat. It was rude to refuse. They politely turn their backs on each other when they are talking food. It’s something to do to show that you hate someone. If he passed in front, he would be invited into each tent and asked to eat.

New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horsebake. The New York police have 170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact , they need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths. There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States. The cost of shoing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars, and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job. A blacksmith’s job is not an easy one. He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit it to the horse’s foot. The blacksmith must bend over all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horse’s leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very storng. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses---for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift its leg. One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948. He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interested in blacksmithing because his father did it, and,as the puts it, “It’s a good way to make a living.”

[材料 8] The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English “You speak very good English.” But the student answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.”The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the student had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the Chinese student still kept saying, “No.” In the end the foreigner gave up and didn’t know what to say. What’s worng with the student’s answer ? It is because he didn’t accept a compliment as the English people do. He should have said, “Thank you.” instead of “No.” He really understood what the American had said. But he thought he should be modest. If he thought, “Thank you,” that would mean he was too proud. According to the Western culture if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say “Thank you.” If someone says to a woman “You look so beautiful with the new clothes on.” She should be very happy and answer “Thank you.” In our country we think being modest is a virture and showing off is a bad thing , but in the West, if you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well,” then the others will think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No, you will certainly be looked down upon by others.” If asking for a job, one says something like “Let me have a try on the job.” Instead of “Yes, I can certainly do it”, he or she will expect to get it. So in the West one should always be confident. Without self-confidence, he cannot go anywhere. Confidence is of great importance to one in a country where competition is quite keen. 2. Why does a man in the West who asks for a job say something like “Yes,I can certainly do it.”? A. Because he is not modest. B. Because in order to get the job he should show that he’s just fit for the job. C. Because he could do nothing but speak that way. D. Because he just wanted to have a try. 9. [材料 9] People celebrate birthdays in almost every country on Earth. And they celebrate them in many different ways. In China and in Japan, for example, the arrival of the New Year is more important than a person’s birthday. So everyone adds a year to their ages on New Year’s Day, instead of on their birthdays. In Brazil, the special birthday food isn’t cake, but special candies. In China, it’s long noodles-for long life. In Iceland, people have pancakes with candies rolled inside them on birthdays. In Britain, a birthday is an all-day celebration. At school, the birthday child is lifted up and “bumped” by his classmates. This means the child is lifted by the feet and arms and bumped to the ground, once for each year and once for good growth. In Israel, the same custom is followed, except the birthday person is lifted and lowered while sitting in a chair. In Holland, children not only get presents, but they give things out, too. They give cakes, cookies and candies to their classmates and teachers on their birthday. In Mexico, it’s good luck to give birthday greetings as early in the day as possible. So it’s usual for the birthday child to be woken up at mid-night by friends singing birthday songs. In India, birthday celebrations also begin before it’s light. Prayers and blessings must be said before morning comes. In Thailand, two tall candles are lighted the night before a birthday. One is as tall as the birthday person. If it goes out early, it’s bad luck. Another custom of Thailand is that they buy live fish and birds for the birthday person and then the birthday person frees the animals, and it brings good luck. In Nigeria, everyone in a certain age group celebrate their birthdays together, on a certain day. In many countries birthday customs are changing. Old customs are giving way to western style birthdays, with candle-topped cakes. [材料 10] The Family The family in the Western world has changed greatly during the last two centuries. Social scientists say this is one of the important changes from a traditional society to a modern society. Before the nineteenth century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not decide whom they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. This family was an important part of the large family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and other relatives. By the nineteenth century, most young people could choose whom they wanted to marry. Marriage joined two people and not two families. The reason two people got married was because they loved each other. It was not just because the families wanted them to marry. At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care of their children. They had to take care of their health and try to give them an education. Before this, most people did not go to school. But now education was necessary for a good life. The parents decided they should have fewer children so they could give each one a good life. They thought it was important for the mother to spend as much time as possible with the children. Before, the family all worked together at home. After 1800 more fathers worked outside the home for money. Mothers stayed home and had greater control of the home and children. Most homes did not produce anything. Home was a safe, warm place for the father after work and for the mother and small children all day. The other relatives were still important, but they were separated more than before. Family life is changing even faster in the United States today. There is almost one divorce for every two marriages. Over 10 percent of families have mother and children but no father. At least half of all children will live part of the time with only one parent. Fifty percent of all mothers work outside the home. In Canada people are getting divorced and remarried more often. They are having fewer children. This is having a powerful effect on a country where change has usually been slow. Some social scientists think that soon there will be no family life in the United States as we know it today. They do not know how people will live. Others think society needs families, and we will always have them. 2. Young people did not decide whom they wanted to marry. 3.
