A One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat untidy. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast. We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide rang of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was worried that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked, "May I get you something?" "A coffee would be nice." Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee, Finally, I rose to leave, wished him good luck, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked, "How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?" "Who?" "The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs." I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world's richest and most powerful men! My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”. “The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “Elevators are socially very interesting but often very awkward(尴尬的)places.” We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed. He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it?s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线 地) across from each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle(三角形). And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle. New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide(滑 动)open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone. Why are we so awkward in lifts? “You don?t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people, we have about an arm?s length of distance between us. And that?s not possible in most elevators.” In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be understood as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said. 24. The main purpose of the article is to ____________.

A. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette B. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator C. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator 25. According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually ____________. A. try to keep a distance from other people B. look around or examine their phone C. make eye contact with those in the elevator D. turn around and greet one another 26. Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at least two people in an elevator? (The point in the chart refers to one person.)

27. The underlined phrase “size up” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to ________. A. 利用 B. 忽视 C.忍受 D. 判断 C Thousands of years ago, birthdays were considered special days. On birthdays, the bad spirits were able to harm you and change your life. It was believed that the only way to solve the problem was to have your friends and family around you, so that good wishes and presents would keep the bad spirits away. Also, noisemakers were thought to be used at parties as a way of scaring away the evil spirits. The custom of lighting candles was created by people believing that the gods lived in the sky. By lighting candles and torches, they were sending a signal or prayer to the gods, so they could be answered. Blowing out the candles and making a wish were thought to be another way of sending a signal or a message. This is how the way we celebrate our birthdays came about. But different cultures celebrate in different ways. The birthday story in the Bible(圣经) that we know best is about the birth of the Christ in Bethlehem (地名: 伯利恒) . For nearly 2000 years since that day, the Christian world has been honoring this birth. The day many Englishmen celebrate is, of course, Christmas. There are other references to birthday parties. King Pharaoh celebrated his birthday by making a feast for his court followers. That was over 4000 years ago. The story of King Herod tells that on his birthday he made a supper for his lords, high captains and other special friends in Galilee (地名:加利利). 28. According to the passage, good wishes and presents given by one?s friends and family on his birthday can _________. A. push bad spirits away B. prove that he?s a popular person C. bring him a big fortune D. cheer him up 29. The two ancient kings? ways of celebrating their birthdays show _________. A. how different cultures celebrate in different ways B. how great the two kings were

C. the two kings? excellent cooking skills D. that their court followers were awarded the special honors 30. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The custom of lighting candles originated with the gods. B. People send messages to the gods by lighting or blowing out the candles. C. The gods celebrate their birthdays by lighting candles. D. The gods will help people realize their dreams on their birthdays. 31. The passage is mainly about ___________. A. the functions of the noises made on birthdays B. how to scare away the bad spirits on birthdays C. how birthdays came about D. the origin of a famous day Christmas

When important events are happening around the world, most people turn to traditional media (媒体) sources, such as CNN and BBC for the news. However, during the war in Iraq in 2003, many people followed the war from the point of view of an unknown Iraqi citizen who called himself “Salam Pax”, which means peace. Salam Pax wrote a diary about everyday life in Baghdad during the war, and posted it on his website. Pax?s online diary was a kind of website known as a “blog”. Blogs are online diaries, usually kept by individuals, but sometimes by companies and other groups of people. They become the fastest growing type of website on the Internet. A blog differs from a traditional website in several ways. Most importantly, it is updated (更新) much more regularly. Many blogs are updated every day, and some are updated several times a day. Also, most blogs use special software or websites, which can help ordinary people easily set up and start writing their own blogs. There are many different kinds of blogs. The most popular type is an online diary of links where the blog writer surfs the Internet and then posts links to sites or news articles that they find interesting, with a few comments about each one. Other types are personal diaries, where the writer talks about their life and feelings. Sometimes these blogs can be very personal. There is another kind of blogging, called “moblogging”, short for “mobile blogging”. Mobloggers use mobile phones with cameras to take photos, which are posted instantly to the Internet. The use of mobile phones in this way made the headlines (头条) in Singapore when a high school student posted a movie he had taken of a teacher shouting at another student on the Internet. Many people were shocked by what the student did, and wanted phones with cameras to be banned from schools. Many people think that as blogs become common, news reporting will rely less on big media companies, and more on ordinary people posting news to the Internet. They think that then the news will be less like a lecture, and more like a conversation, where any one can join in. 32. Which statement about Salam Pax is true? A. Salam Pax was not his real name. B. He worked for CNN. C. He was famous as a host in BBC. D. He used a mobile phone for his blog. 33. What is the biggest difference between blogs and traditional websites?

A. Blogs are updated much more often. B. Blogs contain links to other websites. C. Blogs use special software. D. Blogs contain personal information. 34. According to the passage, which statement about the future is most likely to be true? A. In the future, everyone will have a blog. B. In the future, people will be able to learn news from other sources. C. In the future, large media companies will be unnecessary. D. In the future, blogging technology will be banned. 35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. The History of the Internet B. A New Type of Media C. The War in Iraq D. The Increase of Using Computers
