Unit 7 Sports and Hobbies
Step1: Warming-up I have taught you for more than two months and I am quite satisfied with your behavior in class. But today I’d like to know what you do after class. Ask the following questions: 1. What do you do in your spare time? (Play basketball./Surf the Internet / Listen to the music .) Who plays basketball? When do you play it? Where do you play it? Why do you play it? 2. Do you always have a basketball match? ( Yes, sometimes) 3. If you are the head of PE(physical education) department of the Students’ Union, what will you do to let all your classmates know there will be a match? ( By telephone ./ By writing a poster .) Step2: Presentation Now I tell you some good news. This weekend there will be a basketball match and a boating match. I have written posters for our college. You know I used to be on my school team, so I’m eager to ask you to read the two posters. Do you want to know the details of the posters? .( The underlined phrases should be explained and stressed.) Now let’s read the posters about the two matches and do pair work, finding out what should be included in posters. 2 Ask the students to read the two posters. The following should be included in posters. Event-------------------------------what Organizer /Participants----------who Time--------------------------------when Place--------------------------------where Step3: Practice 1). Talk about the two posters by using “ what , who, when, where” questions. 2). Ask the students to read the first dialogue after the tape and do group work and then pick up two students from each group, one to tell the basketball match, the other to response, by using the following expressions. ① Are you free…? ② There is…/There will be…. ③ Between which teams? ④ …versus…. ⑤ Let’s go to cheer for…. ⑥ What time does it start? ⑦ I’m eager to ⑧ Let’s meet at…. 3). ④ I used to be on our school team. ⑤ I’m sure the team will be happy to have you. Step 4. Practice: Ok. There will be a football match in our college. If you are asked to write a poster, what should you know, what do you need and how can you make the poster attractive? First let’s listen to the five dialogues. After listening you may have a clear idea of how to write and make an attractive poster. After listening to the tape, try to answer the following questions about the 5 dialogues. 1. What is the poster for in the first Act Out? 2. What’s the time and place of the international football match in the second Act Out? 3. Do you like fishing? Is it a great way to spend the weekend according to the third Act Out? 4. What do you need to write a poster for a marathon race according to the forth Act Out? 5. How do we do to make the poster more attractive according to the fifth Act Out? And then ask them to discuss in groups how to write a poster for the football match. (The following information can be provided by the teacher. The poster is for a football match between two departments. It will be held at 3 pm on the playground. Nearly all the students like playing football or watching it, for it is a good form of recreation. To write such a poster, we need some paper, a brush and a bottle of Chinese ink. And we also can draw a picture of a huge football and use the golden highlighter to decorate it to make it more attractive.) At last pick up two students from each group, one group to act out one dialogue according to the questions above (If you are asked to write a poster, what should you know, what do you need and how can you make the poster attractive?). Step 5 homework: There will be an English speech contest in our college. Try to write a poster and make dialogues about it.

Step2: Presentation Now here are two persons, one is Bob, the other is Xiao Li. They’re talking about the outdoor activities for it is a clear day. At last, they decide to take a bicycle ride to the lake area. The water may be cold, so they don’t plan to swim there. They will bring some foods and drinks because they want to have a good picnic by the lake. Now we’ll listen to the tape for the first time. Step3: Listening (dialogue 1) Please find the correct choices in the blanks. After listening to the tape again, can you answer the following questions? 1. Why do Bob and his friend want to spend the day in the open air? 2. Where will they go? 3. Will they swim in the lake? Why or why not? 4. Will they have a picnic? How do you know that? Step4: Presentation Free talk with the students: Just now Bob and Xiao Li talked about the picnic. If you have a chance to go for a picnic, 1. Will you choose outdoor cooking? Why? ( I like cooking and have a strong love for cooking. In warm weather, sometimes I go outside for outdoor cooking, barbecuing with my friends, for I like the taste of barbecued food. Another reason is that I needn’t to be very formal. I can wear old jeans and eat with my fingers.) 2. What food do you barbecue? ( shrimp, potato, sausage, bum, niangao, corn, chicken, and fish etc. ) Step5: Listening (passage ) Listen to something more challenging, ‘Americans love Outdoor Cooking’. Let’s see how Americans love outdoor cooking and why they love it. After listening to the passage twice, the students fill in the blanks. After the third time, they match the information in Column A with the choices in Column B. Let’s check the answers and then read the whole passage together. Step6: Speaking Then ask them to tell the general idea of the passage or retell the passage in their own words. The teacher should give comments on what the students say. Step7: Summary and Homework No matter what outdoor activities we like, they do good for our health. Therefore if we have time, we had better breathe the fresh air with our families or friends. Unit 7 Sports and Hobbies
3rd and 4th periods: Reading Skill Development (1)

Teaching Procedure:
Step 1 Revision & Practice ① Check the answers of Ex 2 and 3 on P.106, and review some important expressions at the same time. ② Finish listening exercises on P.109. Last time we listened about Bob and Xiaowang eating outside. That’s picnicking. Today, we are going to listen for anther popular out-door activity enjoyed by Americans. That’s cooking outside. You may call it barbecuing. Step 2 Warm Up ① Talking about sports games. Some of you may also know that the 15th Asian Games (亚运会) Doha 2006 is closed today. During 15 days, we have enjoyed watching a lot of games. Do you like watching sports games? What games do you like to watch most of all? ② Encourage free talk and collect answers from the students and write some of the games’ names on the blackboard. And finally introduce the triathlon to the students. Some relevant expressions (for reference only) opening ceremony 开幕式 victory ceremony 发奖仪式 high jump 跳高 400-M relay 四乘一百米接力 top seed 头号种子 discus throw 郑铁饼 shot put 郑铅球 race walking 竞走 semi-final 半决赛 surfing 冲浪 team sports 团体项目 man’s single 男子个人项目 In this Asian Games, there are two new items firstly added. They are International Chess and Triathlon. ③ Introduce triathlon to the students. Does anyone know what is triathlon? What are included in it? Collect answers. Step 3 Presentation The triathlon is one of the Olympic sports and also among the most popular ones. It includes 1500m swimming, 40km cycling, and 10km running without stopping. We may feel excited and great to watch them, but they are very tiring and challenging for the sportsmen. You can imagine after the sportsman finish swimming, he will have to jump on his bike, still wet all over. The minute the bicycling is to an end, he has to run. We can imagine how tiring it is! So what makes those sportsmen and sportswomen willing to endure the great hardship? Let’s listen to a girl’s story for the answer. Her name is Melanie Sears and she is 17 years old. She is good at her studying and gets very good academic results. But she gives up everything for this sport. When she first entered the triathlon, she was only 14 and was the only junior being able to take part in the National Championships. (全 国冠军赛). At that time, She was confidant and got good results in swimming and running, but as she went a wrong way in cycling, she ended up cycling 20 km too far and got nowhere. She was determined now matter how difficult and painful it was, she would never give up. And she became the top junior in this year’s European Triathlon Championships.(欧洲铁人三项冠军赛) She is now working very hard on cycling. With her devotion to the triathlon, she will succeed sooner or later. Write down the important words and phrases on the blackboard and practice reading them with the students. Step 4 Practice ① analysis and understanding of the text. 20’ Just now, I introduced the story of Melanie Sears to you. But I did not directly tell you the answers why she
6

likes this game. Can you make a guess? Encourage free talk. 2’ Now let’s take a look at the text carefully and see whether we can get the answer. Analysis paragraphs one by one. First paragraph tells us how popular the triathlon is and introduces the girl Melanie Sears. What is the triathlon? How popular is the triathlon? What do you know about the girl? Ask students to find answers in the paragraph. In second paragraph, we can see two ways of answering the question “why do you take part in this kind of sport? ” If you are asked such a question, how will you answer? How did Melanie Sears answer? (line 3-5) She did not use big words or beautiful language, did she? She is direct and honest. Maybe a little bit inexperienced in answering such questions from reports. But an experienced sportsman may say “it is a big challenge to my mind and body, so I like doing it” or “I can get satisfy myself by doing something difficult and try to do something even more hard” So these are called often-repeated phrases or sentences in an interview. In this paragraph we know that it is very tiring and hard to take part in the triathlon. Can we find some of the answers why she likes this game? (it is great fun, all worth it) Important to explain those often repeated sentences. In the National Championships, did she get any prize? (She got nowhere) Why? (Because she followed a wrong man in cycling and ended up going 20 km too far.) Will she give up because of all these hardships? Why not? (It is dogged to do it.) That also partly explains why she would devote herself to the sport. She won’t give in to the difficulty. What did she get in this year’s European Triathlon Championships? And what is her weakest item among the three? And does she have any trouble in improving it? (She got 13th. She is not good at cycling and the biggest trouble is she has no one of her age to train with. ) The last paragraph summarizes the answer. She devotes herself to the triathlon and has a taste for endurance. So through the whole passage, we know Melanie Sears is so absorbed in triathlon because she loves it, thinks it fun and she has a taste for endurance. (open answers from students) ③ Focal expressions and grammatical structure (can also be explained through text analysis) 10’ Important Words 1. promise 承诺 v. /n. eg: They have promised to reply immediately. promise to be: cause one to expect or hope for… eg. It promises to be a fine day. 2. punish v. cause somebody suffering for wrong doing, treat roughly 惩罚 eg: The driver was punished with a fine for speeding. 3. offer v. give or exchange, say what one is willing to do 主动提供 eg: She is kind enough to offer me the help. 4. worth prep. having a certain value of 值得 eg: The book is well worth reading. 5. tempt v. persuade or attract sb to do sth 诱惑,吸引 eg: Nothing could tempt me to do such a thing. He was tempted into making that wrong decision. 6. endurance n. ability to hear suffering 耐力 eg: Sorry, I have come to the end of my endurance. Endurance plays an important role in this event. 7. end up to finish in a particular way 最后发展为… eg. He ended up running the firm. 8. be determined to do sth. 下定决心做某事 9. give up 放弃某事 10. devote to 献身于…
7

eg. She devoted herself to the writing cause. Focal sentence structure 1.(Para 1)Great for those watching.........so much? Analysis: This is an elliptical sentence It may be rewritten like this: The triathlon maybe great for those who watch it, but how come the triathletes are willing to suffer so much physical hardship? Translation: 这项比赛对于观看者来说固然带劲,但究竟是什么让铁人三项的参赛者如此折磨他们的身 体呢? 2. (Para 2) Melanie Sears has not yet ... when asked similar questions. Analysis: In this sentence, the word phrases is pre modified by those often-repeated, and post modified by a prepositional phrase about personal satisfaction. Translation: 梅拉吉还没有学会使用那些多数运动员在被问类似问题时常脱口而出的陈词滥调, 个人的 满足感啦,向更高目标迈进啦等等。 3. (Para 3)...I ended an cycling 20 kilometers too far. I cried all the way through the running. Analysis: The phrase end up doing sth. … means “其结果是…以…而告结束”; all the way through means “in the whole course of …, during…”. Translation 结果是我多骑了 20 公里自行车,长跑时我哭了一路。 4. That is really a funny thing.” Translation: : “糟糕的是,我没有同龄选手可以一起训练。 ”她说,那可真好笑。 (can also refer to Ex. 6 for sentence structure) Step 4 Practice Do exercise 6 with the students. Pay attention to the sentence structure. Step 5 Consolidation & Homework 5’ Summary of passage I in one or two sentences. Today, we learned a story about a girl taking part in triathlon. She has a taste for endurance and devotes herself to the sport. With her devotion, she will succeed sooner or later. Finish Ex 4 and sentence 1 to 7 of Ex 5.
