阅读理解 A At the age of sixteen, I joined a volunteer group with my dad. I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer(拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced. We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house—something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room? ” Expecting toys that children usually ask for, we were astonished when Josh responded, “I just want a bed.” The boys had never slept in a bed! They were used to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the newest city and bought beds and new bedding. When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning. That afternoon, as we fitted the parts of the beds together, Eric ran into the house to watch us and observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway. As my father slipped a pillowcase (枕 套)onto one of the pillow, Eric asked, “What is that?” “A pillow,” he replied. “What do you do with it?” Eric continued to ask. “When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to my eyes as my father handed Eric the pillow. “Oh... that’s soft,” he said, hugging it tightly. Now, when my sister and I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my dad gently asks, “Do you have a pillow?” We know exactly what he means. 21. The author wrote this passage to _______________. A. ask us to do volunteer work B. introduce volunteer work C. describe his first volunteer project D. collect money for his volunteer project 22. Why was the author shocked on hearing Josh’s answer? A. Because the family lived in a trailer B. Because the boys had no bed to sleep in C. Because Josh didn’t know what a bed was D. Because Josh expected to get some toys 23. By saying “We could hardly contain ourselves.” the author meant that they all _______. A. felt confused B. felt excited with joy C. couldn’t help laughing D. failed to keep the secret 24. From the text, we can learn that Eric had never seen a _________. A. trailer B. house C. bed D. pillow CBBD

George Orwell was the pen name for Eric Arthur Blair, who was born in 1903 in India and died in 1950. Orwell was one of the popular writers back in this era and was very popular for writing news, fiction, literary criticism and poetry. When Blair turned 5 he was sent to a convent ( 女修道院 ) school as a day boy in Henley-on-Thames. The reason for this was that his mother wanted him to have the best education, although his family was not wealthy enough to pay for it. His mother asked her brother to see whether he could find a proper school where Eric Blair could be accepted. After some time they sent him to St Cyprian’s School in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. At the school the headmaster decided to undertake Blair and help him win a scholarship and help his parents by making an agreement in secret for them to pay only half of the normal school fees. After being sent to this school, Blair hated it. He managed to write articles well enough to be published in school magazines, win prizes, and then earn more scholarships into other expensive colleges. As Blair became older he started to write professionally and then changed his pen name to George Orwell. One of his most famous books is called Nineteen Eighty Four and was published in 1949. This book was known for the social aspects, which were about oppression(压迫), poverty and crime. The book became popular in its time and was read by many people. Although he was an experienced writer, his lifestyle was not healthy. Blair ’s lifestyle consisted of heavy smoking. He also continuously placed himself in situations where it was constantly cold and damp. It was said that he had a love for strong tea and also was known for wearing casual clothing most of the time. As the years went on, he soon became sick and died in 1950. To this day some of his works are still read by many people. 29. The passage is written to __________. A. advertise Eric Arthur Blair ’s works B. urge readers to read Eric Arthur Blair ’s books C. introduce Eric Arthur Blair briefly D. inform readers of Eric Arthur Blair ’s lifestyle 30. The reason why Blair was sent to a convent school was that ____________. A. the school fees there were not high B. his mother wanted him to receive the best education C. his mother wanted him to learn more about religions D. Blair can get more scholarships 31. Why was Nineteen Eighty Four famous? A. Because it solved some social problems. B. Because it was easy to understand. C. Because it exposed many social problems D. Because it contained something about the writer ’s lifestyle. 32. All the following about Eric Arthur Blair are mentioned except___________. A. Books B. Lifestyle C. Education D. Marriage CBCD D Some people don’t drink coffee. Are you fond of drinking coffee? Here is something you can use as an argument every time someone warns you against drinking your third cup of coffee for the day: Coffee may actually add some years to your life. A paper published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine details a study that began

in 1995. A total of 402,260 test subjects (none of whom had heart disease or cancer) between the ages 50 and 71 were asked about their coffee drinking habits. Only 42,000 of all the test subjects were non-coffee drinkers, while most of them admitted to drinking two or three cups a day. By the year 2008, 52,000 of the test subjects had already died. Based on the data gathered by the researchers, men who drank two or three cups of coffee daily were 10% less likely to die, while it went up to 13% for women. Researchers haven’t been able to tell the exact substance that benefits your health----it could be any one of coffee’s many components. It’s clear that more research is needed to establish the connection between drinking coffee and having a longer life, but Dr. Frank Hu of Harvard School of Public Health believes it’s “the best evidence we have”. Before you get up from your seat to get another cup of coffee--- don’t forget to check the tips on making great coffee--- Dr. Hu has two pieces of advice for you. First, avoid cream and sugar and anything that could affect the health properties of coffee. Second, filter(过滤)your coffee beans instead of boiling them, because filtering removes the components that can raise your cholesterol (胆固醇) level. 33. What does the author mainly want to tell us by writing this passage? A. People should not drink their third cup of coffee. B. Drinking coffee every day may help people live longer. C. People who live longer generally like drinking coffee. D. Drinking coffee can reduce people’s cholesterol level. 34. We learn from Paragraph 3 that ______________. A. women live longer than men in general B. coffee has greater influence on men than women C. women benefit more from drinking coffee than men D. men usually drink more coffee than women every day. 35. For what purpose is the last paragraph written? A. To tell us how to reduce our cholesterol level. B. To tell us how to drink coffee in a healthy way. C. To warn us about the harm of cream and sugar. D. To tell us the latest achievement of Dr. Hu’s research. BCB 7选5
