II、阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳答案。 A The English are often considered as unfriendly people who don't talk to strangers, but not London taxi drivers. I once asked a cabbie to describe his life to me and he didn't stop talking until I arrived home half an hour later. He told me many interesting stories and this is one of them: ―Some very strange things happen late at night. The other day I was taking a woman home from a party. She had a little dog with her. When we got to her house she found that she'd lost her key. So, I waited in the cab with the dog while she climbed up the window.‖ ―I waited … and waited … After half an hour of ringing the bell I decided to find out what was going on. I tied the dog to a tree and started to climb up the window. The next thing I knew was that the police came. They thought that I was trying to rob the house! Luckily, the woman came downstairs, she'd gone to sleep and forgotten about me and the dog. I was in such a hurry to get away that I forgot to ask her

for the fare(车资,车费).‖? 16.In the writer’s opinion, London taxi drivers are _____________. A. unfriendly B. talkative C. helpful D. strange enough

17. What does the underlined word ―cabbie‖ mean in this passage? A. Conductor. B. Stranger. C. Taxi driver. D. Porter.

18. The man was waiting outside the woman's house because ______. A. he began to like the woman and her dog at the first sight B. the woman had not paid him C. he wanted to know what would happen when the police came D. he was trying to go on talking with her

B As we know, most of the material things in our daily life have to be bought with money. But money is not all powerful. Money can't buy many things such as time and true love. There are 24 hours in a day. Sometimes when we are very happy, we wish that the period of happiness would last longer. But no matter what we do, or how much money we are willing to pay, we cannot make a day last longer than 24 hours. On the other hand, when we are unhappy, money cannot make the unhappy time pass away more quickly. True love is another thing which money cannot buy. Suppose we have someone who really loves us very much. Once he dies, he can give us no more love. Can our money raise him from death and make him love us as before? Here we can see very clearly that money cannot buy us love. Money can buy us diamond things, beautiful clothes, but never time and love. So money, after all, is not all powerful. 19. According to the passage, it is quite impossible for you to buy ______. A. true friendship B. real diamond C. a large house D. an expensive car

20. Which of the sentences expresses the main idea of this passage? A. Money cannot buy time and love. C. Money can buy people material things. B. Money is not powerful at all. D. Money doesn't mean everything.

21.Through the passage the writer wants to tell people not to ______. A. make money B. waste money C. save money D. worship(崇拜) money

22. From the passage we can see that in our life, besides something material, we need something ______. A. spiritual B. beautiful C. lovely D. useful

C More than 10,000 people were made homeless in Ternang when the Sungai Mas overflowed its banks yesterday after six days of continuous heavy rain. The wooden bridge across the river has been washed away. The town is cut off by flood waters. At the fifth mile, Jalan Tengkn, the water is two meters deep. It is closed to all traffic. Flooding first happened at mid-afternoon yesterday along the river banks. People trying to get to higher ground were just in time to escape the destroying of the flood. Most of the flood victims(受 害者) had to leave all their things behind. The National Flood Relief(救济) Center was reported to give its help and by early evening the whole town was moved out, helped by the army, police, Red Cross Society and volunteers(志 愿者). The flood victims are now housed in different simple relief centers in the nearby town of Ternang. ―Everything possible is being done to help the unlucky people,‖ a government spokesman said, ―In fact, money, food and clothing have begun to come in from public organizations and helpful people. A Disaster Relief Fund (救灾基金会) will be started as soon as possible.‖ According to the latest reports it is still raining heavily at Ternang. The whole town is expected to be wholly covered by the water. So far no deaths have been reported.? 23. This passage is probably taken from ______. Lots of people give you advice on overcoming (克服) fear. 26 _____ However, I want to tell you that a world without fear would be more dangerous, less rewarding. So we want to treat fear as a friend? Here are three reasons.

27. _____ Think about it. Do you get more nervous when you meet the girl (or guy) of your dreams? Which is more fearful, talking to the boss of your company or to some of your friends? 28. _____ If you didn’t have fear to guide you, you might not know that! Not so bad, right? Well, I can tell you for sure that those people who are really happy, FEAR less and LOVE a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge, each person as an opportunity to discover more about themselves and the world around them. 27 Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation by resisting(反抗)it. But they can feel better by understanding that there might be a reason for its existence(存在). 28 But rather, they ask themselves questions like: What can I learn from this? How can I make this better? They always seem to be pleasant and hopeful no matter what happens to them. They do the things they do because of the meaning it brings into their lives and because they get a sense of purpose by doing so. 29 They care more about living a life full of meaning rather than, what in our modern society we would call, living a successful life. The fact here is that most of the time they get both, success and meaning, just because they choose to focus on doing the things they love the most. 30 They make sure that their actions bring meaning and happiness in the lives of many. They look for ways to give and to share the best of themselves with the world and to make other people happy. A. They have an ideal living and a balanced life. B. What are the things that these people do differently? C. They are kind to themselves and others and they understand the power of love. D. One of us would walk her, and another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around. One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up one of dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, ―Bad girl,‖ she looked down at the ground and then went and hid . I saw tears in her eyes. Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People

would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone. Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. There are very few places in the world where one cannot find a television set. Some sporting events, such as the Olympic Games or the football World Cup, can attract audiences of many millions. But is television a good or bad influence on young people in the modern world? Thomas Murray, president of the British Parents Against Television Society, believes that it has not improved young people’s lives. ―Television damages family life,‖ he argues. ―At mealtime, families no longer talk to each other. In the evenings, youngsters do not spend good quality time with family members. Instead, they watch television.‖ Murray says that this lack of communication leads to social problems. Murray also believes that the content of television programmes provides young people with poor role models. ―There is so much violence(暴力) on TV—guns, kung fu fighting, and so on. Young people think that all problems should be solved by aggression.‖ It is not just young people’s mental health that worries Murray. ―Teenagers don’t get enough exercise because they spend so many hours watching television. They also develop back problems from sitting down for so long, and eye strain from the effort of watching.‖ Murray would like to see changes to television habits. ―Programmes should be educational. Their contents should be nonviolent and healthy. There should be no programmes after ten o’clock in the evening. Parents should teach their children to enjoy their spare time by playing sports or games. And certainly, the television should be switched off during mealtime . Susan Taylor is a television producer. She believes that television is a good influence on young people. ―Television brings the outside world to youngsters. It even brought us pictures from the moon! And look what happens after the Olympic Games or the World Cup matches have been shown on TV. People start to take more exercise. Also, there are a lot of programmes about healthy eating and keeping fit.‖ However, Taylor agrees with Murray’s point of view concerning parents. ―Of course parents have a role to play in educating their kids. They should turn the TV off during mealtime and they should talk with their children as often as possible.‖ 23 The article is mainly about _____________.

A. that TV is a central part of many people’s lives B. that Murray would like to see changes to television habits C. whether TV is a good or bad influence on young people in the modern world D. that parents should turn the TV off during mealtime and talk with their children 24. VII.书面表达 One possible version: More and more high school students go to find part-time jobs during summer vacation. People have different opinions about this phenomenon. Some people hold that taking a part-time job has advantages. It can help students make some pocket money to meet their daily needs and thus develop a sense of independence. And it can improve their social communication skills. They can build up new friendship and gain working experience as well, which is helpful to their growth. However, other people think it still has some disadvantages. If a student spends too much time doing part-time job, he or she will certainly fail to concentrate on study. Some students may be cheated or hurt by their employers, because they don't know how to protect themselves.

Besides, their early contact with society adds greater worries to their parents. In my opinion, I am in favor of taking a part-time job. But we have to keep a balance between part-time job and study. After all, study is our main task at school.

I have always been interested in making things. When I was a child, I enjoyed drawing, but I also liked making things out of clay. I won a prize for one of my paintings when I was fourteen. That may be why I went to art school four years later. But I studied painting at first, not pottery. I like being a potter because I like to work with my hands and feel the clay. I’m happy working by myself and being near my home. I don’t like mass-produced(集体生产)things, because they are made by machines. I think crafts(手工艺) are very important and crafts-people make things cleverly with hands. They make our lives colorful. When I left school, I got some money. I hope to become a full-time crafts-woman. This work-place is small, but I wish to move to a larger one

A. 14 B. 16 C. 18 D. 21 C How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age give him without wasting his time in useless regrets. Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will be ever again in his return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done. When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society. 23. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______. A. life for a child is fairly easy. B. a child is always loved whatever he does C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return D. only children are interested in life 24. The main idea of the passage is that _______. A.life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains B.young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard C.childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life 25. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what "keeping up with the Joneses" is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants. Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They had to move back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses‖ because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States. "Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are "Joneses" in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 19. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ______. 21. What's the author's attitude to keeping up with the Joneses?

different meanings a long time ago. One example is the word nice. Around the year 1300, nice was first used in English to mean ―stupid‖. Two hundred years later, nice began to carry a ―better‖ meaning. If people said a book was written nicely, they meant the book was written ―clearly‖ or ―carefully‖, not ―stupidly‖. After 1800, nice began to take its meaning like ―kind‖ or ―friendly‖. Since then , people have thought of nice as a word with good meanings. A good change of a word’s meaning like this example of nice is called AMELIORATION. Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher ” , since almost all pupils study English from their third year. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is no other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flashcards(识字卡) ,fun English- language toys and even dolls which can sing English songs! My interest in English had certainly been awakened(唤起) when I began to learn English at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn New Concept English by myself! I was confused and even angry. I could not understand why a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow through with his idea. At first, I read stories with tears and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. In the end, I came to love the funny stories and, to be honest,

my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have got so far without his support. And that’s why my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. He is the one who awoke my interest, who gave me confidence and who offered me much needed help. 20.Most pupils in China begin to learn English________. It’s time to do something for your father – the man who for many people has been an encouragement and support since birth. The third Sunday of June is Father’s Day. The holiday honors not only fathers, but also all men who act as father figures, such as stepfathers, uncles and grandfathers. The idea of Father’s Day came from the love and appreciation of American lady called Sonore Smart Dodd in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. He raised six children by himself on a countryside farm in Washington State after his wife died during the birth of their sixth child. When Dodd became an adult, she realized the selflessness her father has shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father who did all for his children. In the eyes of his daughter, William Smart was a courageous, selfless and loving man. Dodd’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Washington on June 19th, 1910. In 1924, US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s day. So this is a perfect chance to let your father know what he means to you. To show your love and respect, you need not buy an expensive gift. You can send him a home – made card; You can call him every day; Even you can give him a sweet smile when he comes back from work. All these little things are easy for us to do, but they can show your care and love to your father. 16.Which of the following was NOT used to describe the character of Dodd’s father? A.Loving B.Selfless. C.Courageous. D.Humorous. 17.What does the underlined word ―raise‖ in the fourth paragraph mean? A.养育 B.饲养 C.升起 D.抬高 18.What’s the best title for this passage? A.Being a Good Father B.Father’s Day C.Dodd’s Father D.Showing Love to Your Father B
A mouse looked through a crack(缝隙) in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package; what food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap! Running to the farmyard, the mouse shouted, warning everyone, ―There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.‖ The chicken, with her head high, glared at the mouse and said, ―Shut up. Little Ugly. This is a great concern to you, but it has nothing to do with me; I can’t be troubled by it. The mouse turned to the pig and told him, ―There is a mouse trap in the house.‖ ―I am so sorry, Mr. Mouse,‖ said the pig sympathetically, ―but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; you are

always in my prayers.‖ The mouse turned to the cow, who relied, ― A mouse trap, am I in great danger, huh?‖ Now the mouse had to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone. The very night a sound was heard through the house, like that of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a big poisonous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. It is said that drinking fresh chicken soup will help treat fever, so the farmer took his sharp knife to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer killed the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow killed to provide for all of them to eat. So next time when someone is facing a problem, don’t say that it has nothing to do with you. Remember: when the least of us is threatened, we all might be at risk. 19. We could see from the passage that the mouse was _____. A. good at cheating others B. honest C. kind and warm-hearted D. foolish 20. Which of the following is False according to the passage? A. The others help the farmer kill the cow. B. The mouse trap was very practical C. The pig is more friendly than the other animals. D. The farmer’s family was very poor and they had no friends 21. What can we learn from the story? A. Better safe than sorry B. Traps can always cause chain reactions C. To keep the balance of nature is the duty of us all D. What you think impossible to happen to you might come at you unexpectedly

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages. On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages." The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away. "You are cheating," the captain said to the sailor. "The fire's warming you." "But it's half a mile away!" said the sailor. "A fire's fire," answered the captain. "I have won." The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken."

"I can," answered the captain. "If you cook this chicken," said the sailor, "I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can't, you will give me your ship." The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, "Where's the fire?" "There it is," answered the sailor. "On the shore." "But it's half a mile away," said the captain angrily. " 'A fire's fire,' you said," answered the sailor. "If it is enough to warm me in the water, it is enough to cook your chicken." 22. The captain got the sailor's wages ________.
