A My son was a second-grader. He w

ent to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment. One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school. ―Perhaps he’s just a bit late,‖ said the secretary. ―I will call the driver to see if those children are home.‖ A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends’ parents, to see if perhaps he had gotten off at their stop to play. The answers were all ―No.‖ By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasn’t at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was from the driver. ―He’s okay,‖ I heard. ―He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since it’s dark, can he spend the night with my family?‖ I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the children’s names when they got off the bus. I think highly of the school for taking the cautionary (警戒的) step ahead; it is a sign of their concern for students, parents, and staff. 1. From Paragraph 1 we learn that ________. GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swamps (红树沼泽) across
the Americas can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted(适应)to land millions of years ago, a new study shows. The Magrove Rivulus, a type of small killifish, lives in small pools of water in a certain type of empty nut or even old beer cans in the mangrove swamps of Belize, the United States and Brazil. When their living place dries up, they live on the land in logs (圆木) , said Scott Taylor, a researcher at the Brevard Endangered Lands Program in Florida. The fish, whose scientific name is Rivulus marmoratus, can grow as large as three inches. They group together in logs and breathe air through their skin until they can find water again. The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize. ―We kicked over a log and the fish just came crowding out,‖ Taylor told Reuters in neighboring Guatgemala by telephone. He said he will make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year. In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating. Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at time, while lungfish found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in an inactive state. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and remain active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at Canada’s University of Guelph. Further studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.

―These animals live in conditions similar to those that existed millions of years ago, when animals began making the transition(过渡)from water onto land,‖ Wright said. 8. The Mangrove Rivulus is a type of fish that _______. A. likes eating nuts C. is the longest living fish on earth B. prefers living in dry places D. can stay alive for two months out of water

9. Who will write up a report on Mangrove Rivulus? A. Patricia Wright C. Scientists from Belize B. Researchers in Guatemala D. Scott Taylor

10. According to the text, lungfish can________ A. breathe through its skin C. remain alive out of water B. move freely on dry land D. be as active on land as in water

11. What can we say about the discovery of Mangrove Rivulus? A. It was made quite by accident C. It was supported by an American magazine D Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it's because we have mirror neurons (神经元)in our brains. Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate (模仿)it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people. Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: "The hand took hold of the ball"), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball). Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders. Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information concerning how humans behave and interact(互动).Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent (相等物)for B. It was based on a lab test of sea life D. It was helped by Patricia Wright

neuroscience of what Einstein's theory of relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does—well, perhaps you'll understand why. 12. Mirror neurons can explain _____. A. why we cry when we are hurt B. why we cough when we suffer from a cold C. why we smile when we see someone else smile D. why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late 13. The underlined word "triggered" in the third paragraph probably means ―____‖. A. set off B. cut off C. built up D. broken up

14. We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _____. A. relate to human behavior and interaction B. control human physical actions and feelings C. result in bad behavior and social disorders D. determine our knowledge and language abilities 15. What is the passage mainly about? A. Ways to find mirror neurons. C. Existence of mirror neurons. B. Problems of mirror neurons. D. Functions of mirror neurons.

Because students can stay in touch with their friends and family wherever they are. Besides, the mobile phone is a way to have fun. However, there are some problems with using mobile phones. The ring of phones can disturb teachers and students in the classroom. Another problem is that some students can spend too much time and money on phone calls and sending messages. In conclusion, I suggest students not use phones in the classroom. Also, as it is expensive, the owner should take good care of it Yours sincerely, Li Hua
