阅读(共两节，满分 50 分)
第一节：阅读理解(共 20 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 40 分) 阅读下列短文，从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳 选项。 A At first, the earth's surface layer(层)was made up of huge blocks of hard, solid rocks. Then slowly, there rocks broke up into smaller and smaller pieces. Finally stones, pebble( 卵石 )and grains of sand were formed. Many sorts of plants and animals lived and died on the surface of the earth.Their remains mixed up with the stones, pebbles and formed soil. The outmost layer of the earth is soil. There are many ways in which large pieces of rock break into smaller ones.Wind, water, heat and cold help to break up rocks. When winds blow grains of sand against a large rock for a long time, the
softer layers of the rock are slowly worn away. These leave holes and crack( 裂缝 )in the rock, which become bigger and finally the rock breaks up into smaller pieces. The moving water of streams and rivers also help to break up rocks. As the water moves along, it carries with it small pieces of rock. These rub the larger ones. Thus, the larger rocks are worn down to smaller pieces. The heat of the sun is also helpful to breaking up rocks. When the sun shines, the rocks become very hot.If these rocks are suddenly cooled, they may crack.Ice also plays a part in making soil.Water in the cracks can turn into ice in cold weather. As this happens, it becomes bigger and the cracks become wider, and finally break into smaller pieces. B Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets which other scientists had
made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse. Now Halley set to work, He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he
had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour.

C Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the earth to show how clouds are moving.Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls. Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to US through satellites.Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35 ， 880 kilometers above the
equator.Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11， 000 kilometers an hour — exactly the same speed that the earth rotates(转动)．A satellite must orbit the earth with its antennae(天 线)facing the earth.Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit, so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days. Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the earth.A satellite usually works for about 10～12 years.Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to earth to be repaired.Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other. D As summer ends and women prepare to trade in their beach wear for autumn fashion，they should be aware of fashion that may be harmful to their health.Among these dangerous trends are large bags or purses，high－heeled shoes and jewelry. Large purses or bags may be to blame for back and neck pain because they place a strain on the shoulder and neck.Avoid bags that weigh more than 10 pounds. This may be difficult for busy moms who use their purses to carry everything. I suggest that women look for small purses made with light material or backpacks where weight is distributed(分布) evenly across the back and shoulders. If women cannot bear to part with oversized bags or purses，they should have neck，back and shoulder strength－ training exercises. They should also regularly exercise the shoulder on which they carry the bag. 参考答案：One possible version This passage tells us about the origin and the purpose of National Grandparents Day.On this day，schools，churches and family have
some special events to honor grandparents. As we all know，China is becoming an aging society，which leads to many social problems and calls for more care for seniors. To give more care to seniors，in my opinion，children should take good care of their aged parents and relatives. As is commonly seen，the old often feel lonely especially when their children live far away.So children should visit their parents more frequently and spare more time with them. Also ， communities should organize a variety of activities for seniors，such as dancing parties，painting clubs and so on，where they can enjoy themselves.Meanwhile，the elderly should be encouraged to develop their hobbies. In a word，we should pay more attention to the problem of caring for seniors.
