And if I have to give him a certain amount of money. What is to prevent me keeping all the money left and claiming that the robber had taken it?” Just then a tall and strong man walked in, wearing a mask. “This is a holdup!” the man said. Roughly, taking a gun from his pocket and stepping over to George’s cage. “All right, hand it over!” “Yes, sir,” said George. “Would you like it in ten-or twenty-dollar bills?” “Just hand it over!” said the robber. George took all the bills from the top section close to six thousand dollars. He passed them through the window. The robber snatched them, stuffed them into his pocket, and turned to leave. Then, while everyone was watching the robber, George calmly lifted off the top section of the cashbox and slipped bills from the bottom section into his pockets. The door swung and the robber was gone. George fell down and fainted. When he came to he smiled up at the worried faces looking down at him. “I’m all right,” he stated bravely.
“You might just as well go home, George.” Mr. Bell, the chief accountant, said. As soon as he was safely behind his bedroom door, George took the money from his pockets and counted it. Seven thousand dollars! The next morning when George arrived at the bank, it was not open for business, but everyone was there, helping to check the bank’s accounts. George was called into Mr. Burrows’ office. The bank president seemed strangely cheerful. “George,” he said, “I want you to meet Mr. Charles, who used to be president of our bank.” “Good morning, George,” said the former president. “I was extremely sorry to hear you fainted yesterday. Are you all right now?” “Yes, sir, just fine, thanks.” “I was sorry to give you a hard time yesterday, but with all the banks being robbed these days, I played my little game yesterday, just to keep everybody on his toes.” “I don’t understand,” said George. “What game?” The old man laughed and quickly took out a mask. He placed it over his face and said, “All right. Hand it over!” Mr. Burrows laughed but George didn’t. “And the money?” George asked in a faint voice. “Don’t worry,” Mr. Charles said. “I put it all back in your cashbox--- all six thousand. We’re just finishing up the check-up now.” Behind them, the door opened and Mr. Bell put his head into the room. “Mr. Burrows,” he said gravely, “may I see you a moment?” 56. George didn’t learn who the robber really was until _____. A. Mr. Bell began taking an audit(查账) B. Mr. Burrows called him in C. Mr. Charles explained it to him D. Mr. Bell talked to Mr. Burrows 58. From the ending of the story, we know Mr.Bell had discovered that _____. A. seven thousand dollars was missing B. Mr. Charles had not returned the six thousand dollars C. no money was missing D. George had not returned six thousand dollars which was stolen B What would you think if you went back to school on Monday and there were no desks or chairs in your classroom? That's what some fourth-and-fifth-graders at a school in Minnesota discovered earlier this year when they took part in a research project to see if changing their classrooms would make them more active. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic were concerned about reports that as many as half of American kids could be seriously overweight - or obese - by the year 2014. So they set up a different kind of classroom, which you might see in the future.
Instead of desks, the Elton Hills Elementary students had adjustable work stations where they could stand, kneel on mats or sit on big exercise balls. Students were given laptops and iPods that allowed them to move and learn at the same time. Sensors (传感器) were attached to the kids' legs to calculate how many calories students burned in their new set-up. Their typical school day was probably not anything like yours. One group of students downloaded an audio file (有声文件) of their teacher reading a book; they listened to it while walking for exercise. Another group took a spelling test by listening to their iPods. Some students liked the freedom, but others missed the traditional classroom. "I don't like standing up," Mariah Matrious said. "My legs get tired, and I like sitting down. " So, did the experiment work? Researchers still are studying the data, but early results indicate that the kids did move around more in the new classroom. "It showed us that, given the opportunity to move, kids will move," said researcher Lorraine Lanningham-Foster. That's important because studies have shown that even simple movement - climbing stairs instead of taking an elevator(电梯), for example, or washing dishes by hand instead of loading the dishwasher - can be as important as formal exercise when it comes to controlling one's weight. 59. The school in Minnesota carried out the research _______. A. to punish the badly performed students B. to prevent children from being too fat C. to spare a lot of money for the state D. to meet the needs of different children 60. The newly designed classrooms are different from the traditional ones EXCEPT that _____________. A. there were no desks and chairs B. the students can move and learn at the same time C. students in different groups are given different tasks D. teachers don't necessarily instruct the students 61. According to Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, ________. A. the research got some expected results B. the experiment needs further changes C. not everyone liked the freedom of this new style D. The students should be taught without classrooms 62. What would be the best title for the text? A. No Desks or Chairs in the Classroom B. New Classrooms in the Future C. School Takes a Stand Against Obesity D. Washing dishes by hand in the Classroom C American researchers found females are the more talkative sex because of a special “language protein(蛋白质)” in the brain. The study, conducted by neuroscientists （ 神 经 学家 ） and psychologist from the University of Maryland, concluded that women talked more because they had more of the Foxp2
protein. The research, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that higher levels were found among humans that were women but in rats that were males. Their findings came after it was previously claimed that ladies speak about 20,000 words a day – over 13,000 more than men. "This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language-associated protein in humans or animals,” said Prof Margaret McCarthy, who led the study. In their study, the researchers attempted to determine what might make male rats more vocal than their female friends. They separated four-day-old rats from their mothers and then counted the number of times they cried out in the “ultrasonic range”, the frequencies higher than humans can hear, over five minutes. While both sexes called out hundreds of cries, the males called out twice as often, they found. But when the pups were returned to their mother’s cage, she fussed over her sons first. Tests conducted on the parts of the brain known to be associated with vocalcalls showed the male pups have up to twice as much Foxp2 protein as the females. The researchers then increased the production in the brains of female pups and reduced it in males. This led to the female rats crying out more often and their mothers showing more interest to them. In contrast, males became less “talkative”. The researchers then tested samples from ten children, aged between three and five, which showed that females had up to 30 per cent more of the Foxp2 protein than males, in a brain area key to language in humans. “Based on our observations, we assume higher levels of Foxp2 in girls and higher levels of Foxp2 in male rats is an indication that Foxp2 protein levels are associated with the more communicative sex,” said Prof McCarthy. "Our results imply Foxp2 as a component of the neurobiological basis of sex differences in vocal communication in mammals." 63. From the second paragraph, we can learn that ________. A. women always speak more words than men B. men and male rats have low levels of language protein C. women and male rats have similar levels of Foxp2 D. McCarthy isn’t the first to find females more talkative 64. The underlined phrase “fussed over” in the third paragraph probably means______. A. paid attention to B. related to C. put pressure on D. counted on 65. The researchers carried out the experiments on rats in order to _______. A. test which part of the brain is key to language in rats and humans B. prove the levels of Foxp2 protein in humans and rats are different C. determine the reason why female rats are more talkative than male rats D. discover the association between Foxp2protein and vocal communication 66. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage ? A. Tests on humans and rats B. Why women are the talkative sex C. Sex differences in Foxp2 protein D. Foxp2 protein determines oral ability
第 II 卷(共 35 分)
第四部分：任务型阅读(共 10 小题：每小题 1 分，满分 10 分) You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good writer, read good writing. Unfortunately, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience. As you start reading a book, poem, or story, do so with no thought at all and the experience will improve your writing. Just read for pleasure to begin with, or to learn. As you progress through the work, think about whether or not it is "easy" reading. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected? These latter situations are a chance to learn from the writer's mistakes. In fact, the reader should not have to worry about how an author does "his thing". he should be able to just enjoy and learn. Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to consider why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing the passage but put more efforts in enjoying it from the whole. Another thing I do, particularly with nonfiction （非小说） books, is to select a part to read as if it is a completely separate work. Once again, read as a common consumer rather than a critic (批 评家). For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic level, however, nothing is more suitable than your devotion to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book's worth of meaning and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft（工艺）. As you can see, there is no one simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make it boring. Select authors you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as you are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer. Title: Improve Your Writing by Reading ▲ Reading good writing helps you become a good writer. What's worse, it is impossible for them to concentrate on their studies and to get high marks in all kinds of tests . The reasons why many students don’t have breakfast are as follows. On one hand, some students who study late into the night refuse to have breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed .On the other hand, some of the students are given money to buy breakfast on their way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them . Besides, to our surprise, in order to stay slim and lose weight, a few school girls and boys often go to school without breakfast. In my opinion, the morning meal plays an important part in our daily life, which can provide 30 percent of the whole day's energy .In addition, for creative abilities and better judgment, school kids are supposed to start their days with a regular breakfast.
